Natalie Portman<\/strong> is disappointed by the lack of women directors recognized at this year\u2019s Oscars.<\/p>\n

Hamnet<\/em> filmmaker Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong> is the sole woman to make the cut in the Best Director field at the 98th Academy Awards, for which the nominations were revealed on Thursday, January 22.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Variety<\/em> at the Sundance Film Festival, where she debuted her new movie, The Gallerist<\/em>, on Saturday, January 24, Portman said, \u201cSo many of the best films I saw this year were made by women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just see the barriers at every level because so many were not recognized at awards time,\u201d she continued. \u201cBetween Sorry, Baby<\/em> and Left-Handed Girl<\/em> and Hedda<\/em> and The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em>. \u2026 Extraordinary films this year that I think a lot of people are enjoying and loving, but are not getting the accolades they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNominations for the 2026 Oscars have officially been revealed, and as usual, film fans are already calling out some major surprises and snubs. Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks teamed up to announce the nominees for the 98th annual Academy Awards on Thursday, January 22. Sinners dominated the nominations list, with a record-breaking total of 16 [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sorry, Baby<\/em> was directed by and stars Eva Victor<\/strong>, who is nonbinary, while Left-Handed Girl<\/em> was helmed by Tsou Shih-Ching<\/strong>. Hedda<\/em>, which starred Tessa Thompson<\/strong>, was directed by Nia DaCosta<\/strong>, and Mona Fastvold<\/strong> helmed Amanda Seyfried<\/strong> in The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despite significant awards buzz for each film, this year\u2019s Best Director field features just one woman: Zhao, only the second woman to win the award in 2021 for Nomadland<\/em>. The field is rounded out by Marty Supreme<\/em>\u2019s Josh Safdie<\/strong>, One Battle After Another<\/em> filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson<\/strong>, Joachim Trier<\/strong> for Sentimental Value<\/em>\u00a0and Sinners<\/em> director Ryan Coogler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Portman\u2019s latest film, The Gallerist<\/em>, which costars Jenna Ortega<\/strong> and singer Charli XCX<\/strong>, was directed by Cathy Yan<\/strong>, whom the Oscar winner praised as a \u201cbrilliant leader\u201d in her interview with Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a specificity of vision. All the work ahead of time and her precise leadership leads to the possibility of spontaneity,\u201d Portman said. \u201cBalancing this very specific tone that is satirical but also true emotion in it, which is almost impossible to create, she knew how to do it and guide us to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> generated buzz heading into last week\u2019s Oscar nominations reveal, many awards watchers were surprised that lead star Seyfried was not nominated for Best Actress. She was previously nominated in the same category at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes.<\/p>\n
