Jan 26 (Reuters) – Russian drones and missile strikes on Monday hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, \u200bknocking out power to 80% of the city and surrounding \u200cregion and striking apartment buildings, a school and a kindergarten, local officials said.<\/p>\n
Two \u200cpeople were injured, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said in a video posted on the Telegram messaging app.<\/p>\n
“Our energy system came under attack and there was quite serious damage. All crews are at work to \u2060eliminate all the negative consequences \u200cquickly,” Syniehubov said.<\/p>\n
“About 80% of the city of Kharkiv and Kharkiv region is without electricity,” he added.<\/p>\n
The \u200dconstant threat of further air raids was complicating repair efforts, he said.<\/p>\n
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said an “energy site” had been targeted in the city as \u200bnight-time temperatures dipped to -14 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit). A city \u200cschool was badly damaged, he added.<\/p>\n
Unofficial Telegram channels posted pictures showing the city, a frequent Russian target located 30 km (18 miles) from the Russian border, had been plunged into darkness. Photos showed parts of building interiors seriously damaged.<\/p>\n
In Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s hometown \u2060southeast of Kharkiv, Russian drones hit a \u200bhigh-rise apartment building, the head of \u200bthe industrial city’s military administration said.<\/p>\n
Oleksandr Vilkul said on Telegram that the impact triggered a fire, but residents were \u200dsafely evacuated.<\/p>\n
Reuters could \u2060not independently verify the reports and there was no immediate reaction from Russian officials.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian capital Kyiv has been hit \u2060by three massive air attacks since the New Year, knocking out power and \u200cheating to hundreds of buildings.<\/p>\n
