Trump reveals Iran approached US requesting return to negotiations<\/h3>\n
Trump, earlier this month, revealed that Iran has approached the US to request a return to negotiations regarding a new nuclear deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think they\u2019re tired of being beaten up by the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cIran wants to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n
“We may need to act before a meeting with them\u2026 we are in the process of coordinating a meeting,\u201d the president told reporters aboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated at the time that communication lines between Tehran and Washington remained open, including through a US special envoy or through traditional intermediaries such as Switzerland.<\/p>\n
Baghaei said that “contradictory messages” had been sent that caused ambiguity and that Iran remained committed to diplomacy.<\/p>\n
In November, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi commented that Washington’s approach toward Tehran did not indicate any readiness for “equal and fair negotiations.”<\/p>\n
“The US cannot expect to gain what it couldn’t in war through negotiations,” he said at the time.<\/p>\n
During June’s Israel-Iran war, the Islamic Regime claimed that dialogue with the US over Tehran’s nuclear program is “meaningless” after Washington supported Israeli airstrikes.<\/p>\n
“The other side (the US) acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory,” the semi-official Tasnim News Agency quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei as saying at the time.<\/p>\n
Shortly before the war broke out, Trump told Fox News that Iran was becoming “much more aggressive” in nuclear talks.<\/p>\n
A sixth round of indirect talks was scheduled for June 15, but was cancelled due to the Israel-Iran war breaking out.<\/p>\n
US officials have said that any deal would have to include the removal of all of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, a cap on its stockpile of long-range missiles, a change in Iran’s policy of supporting regional terror proxies, such as the Houthis, Hezbollah, and Hamas, and a ban on independently enriching uranium, according to Axios’s Barak Ravid.<\/p>\n
