Season 4 of Bridgerton<\/em> pulls inspiration from Julia Quinn<\/strong>\u2018s book An Offer From a Gentleman<\/em> \u2014 but there were also a few major changes.<\/p>\n

The latest season of Bridgerton follows Benedict\u2019s (Luke Thompson<\/strong>) love story with Sophie (Yerin Ha<\/strong>) from the third novel in Quinn\u2019s series. As some fans know, Benedict\u2019s world gets turned upside down when he crosses paths with a mysterious woman in a Cinderella-inspired meet cute.<\/p>\n

Viewers originally expected to see Benedict to be the star of season 3, but the Netflix show hasn\u2019t followed the novels exactly when it comes to details \u2014 or the order of the stories. The third season was the first time Bridgerton pivoted by focusing on Colin (Luke Newton<\/strong>) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan<\/strong>), who are the leads of Quinn\u2019s fourth book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Showrunner Jess Brownell<\/strong> later broke down what changes she wanted to make for the series and why.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe decision for Bridgerton not to follow the exact order of Julia Quinn\u2018s book series certainly hasn\u2019t been favored by all. The historical drama, which premiered in 2020, focuses on the members of the wealthy Bridgerton family as they search for love in 19th century London. Season 1 focused on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI am really not trying to shake things up too much. I really believe in the vision of the show,\u201d Brownell told Refinery29 in April 2024. \u201cI really want to serve the stories and the books the best way possible. It just naturally felt like, for Penelope and Colin, it made sense to lean into a romantic comedy tropes. So this season does have a bit more humor in it and it has the awkward banter. So that\u2019s something that will feel slightly elevated in terms of being different from last season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thompson, for his part, didn\u2019t appear to be bothered by the fact that Benedict\u2019s story was delayed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019d be nice to give the character a full exploration, that\u2019d be really fun, but the way the show runs \u2014 it\u2019s a big ensemble show,\u201d he told Country and Town House in May 2024. \u201cAs long as I\u2019m given interesting things to do, I don\u2019t really mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Penelope isn\u2019t outed as Lady Whistledown until Colin\u2019s book \u2014 Romancing Mister Bridgerton<\/em> \u2014 the identity of the gossip writer was still under wraps when Benedict was single. Quinn\u2019s An Offer From a Gentleman<\/em> showed Whistledown sharing her thoughts on Benedict\u2019s love life, which was still the case on screen despite people knowing that Penelope was behind the column.<\/p>\n

Season 4 leaned into the change by showing Penelope struggling with the aftermath of the Queen knowing her identity \u2014 and demanding her input on the success of this season\u2019s matches.<\/p>\n

In the book series, Benedict settled down with Sophie before Colin and Penelope found their happily ever after. While Benedict and Colin were both available bachelors in Quinn\u2019s version, season 4 has Colin enjoying marriage and the arrival of his first child.<\/p>\n

Netflix viewers have to suspend their disbelief when it comes to Benedict kissing Sophie \u2014 who is wearing a mask \u2014 at his mother\u2019s ball and then running into Sophie as a maid days later. He doesn\u2019t realize that the two women are actually the same person, which creates confusion when he falls in love with both.<\/p>\n

The book made Benedict\u2019s inability to connect the dots a bit more believable by having Benedict and Sophie\u2019s interaction at the ball take place three years before they meet again unmasked, allowing Benedict to differentiate the two women.<\/p>\n

In the show, Benedict got injured saving Sophie\u2019s life, which resulted in an infected cut that got worse once they got to My Cottage. In the book, Benedict simply suffered from a fever that took a few days to recover from.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Benedict\u2019s illness, he slipped in and out of consciousness in both versions. Season 4 shows Sophie looking after him, but in the book, she goes one step further by kissing Benedict in his sleep.<\/p>\n
