Anyone can have it. But real anxious attachment style can be often debilitating and you need to understand the difference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So as I\u2019ve mentioned before, anxiously attached people are prone to <strong>negative affect.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is negative affect? In psychology, negative affectivity, or negative affect, <em>is a personality variable that involves the experience of negative emotions and poor self-concept.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Imagine trying to be confident with that as your inner template! Can you imagine?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A poor self concept is literally embedded into your attachment template and you\u2019re trying to be confident?<\/p>\n<p>Well, fear not. I mean every second of every day. You just can\u2019t escape the rain even if you tried.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine yourself walking around every day with a bright and gentle sun constantly following you everywhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trick here is replacing the rainy cloud with the gentle sun that shines on you as a source of warmth and yes, vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p>Now, you\u2019re going to become the sun for yourself through self appreciation. That\u2019s the goal we need to have in mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But first, we have to be considerate of what it means to appreciate yourself when you\u2019re an anxiously attached person.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Self_appreciation_is_not_a_thing_with_anxious_attachment\"\/>Self appreciation is not a thing with anxious attachment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Self appreciation is not a thing when you have anxious attachment, because of two things:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The experience of negative affect which is central to anxious attachment; and<\/li>\n<li>The template of anxious attachment which is seeing yourself negatively and seeing others positively.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We have to acknowledge that self appreciation doesn\u2019t come with the territory of anxious attachment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How do you convince yourself you\u2019re awesome when your attachment template always tries to bring you back to the equilibrium of: \u201cme negative others positive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You have to work with the wound itself. Here\u2019s what I mean:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Having anxious attachment is like having a gaping wound on your leg.<\/p>\n<p>When you have a huge gaping wound on your leg, sometimes you just want to cover it up with a surface band aid and not think about it, because it reminds you of how it got there in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>But the real way to address the wound is to look deeply into it, see what it needs to heal, and then give it exactly what it needs so that it can not only heal, but heal without succumbing to new infections and assaults from your environment.<\/p>\n<p>What does that look like in the context of anxious attachment?<\/p>\n<p class=\"yellow-cake\">SPECIAL REPORT: How to Become the World\u2019s Most Attractive &amp; Feminine Goddess (Even if you have no self esteem or no man has ever paid you any attention\u2026) <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">CLICK HERE to download it at no cost.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_It_looks_like_appreciating_your_anxious_attachment_first\"\/>#1: It looks like appreciating your anxious attachment first.\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>As with anyone who\u2019s anxious, you don\u2019t appreciate yourself enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t appreciate your progress and where you\u2019ve been, and that\u2019s something you\u2019ve got to focus on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also know that your anxious attachment, as maladaptive as it may seem on the outside, there\u2019s still a good intent behind it. So don\u2019t berate yourself for the good intent that it has.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_It_looks_like_not_expecting_yourself_to_be_perfect\"\/>#2: It looks like not expecting yourself to be perfect.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Adjust your expectations of yourself and your actions. It escalated and it was now coming from our floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now for some context, Vietnam is really known for buildings burning down, due to the hot weather, the building codes etc, so knowing that, my stress instantly went up.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got 3 young kids and I wasn\u2019t about to see any of them die in a fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I yelled to everyone to get out of the house.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, half my kids were naked at the time. But I didn\u2019t care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door, looked outside, I heard the blasting fire alarm, and then I made eye contact with this cleaning lady who was casually mopping the hallway like nothing was wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She smiled at me and 5 seconds later the fire alarm ends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, a loud announcement is broadcasted throughout the building:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThis is a fire alarm test. Do not evacuate. This is a test.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I look over my shoulder and I just see David laughing playfully.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The more David laughed the worse it made me feel about my actions, even though he didn\u2019t mean anything bad by laughing.<\/p>\n<p>I am sensitive and in took offense to that, being frustrated with him for laughing at me in a playful way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I interpreted his laughing as a signal that I was \u201cbroken\u201d and unfixable and hopeless. But that perpetuates shame.<\/p>\n<p>Because I\u2019m expecting myself to be perfect.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the time, we expect ourselves to be perfect, we try to hide our anxiousness deep down, we try to stay in control and keep a strong facade, but this is counter-productive to healing.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we must not expect ourselves to be any less than anxiously attached.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in the potential triggers for your anxious attachment, I\u2019ve written about the <strong>12 Anxious Attachment triggers: How to Recognise and Heal them. CLICK here to read this article.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Path_to_Healing_Some_Questions_to_Ask_Yourself%E2%80%A6\"\/>The Path to Healing: Some Questions to Ask Yourself\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>So instead of expecting yourself to be perfect, ask yourself these questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you expect yourself to be any different?<\/li>\n<li>Would you expect any human who went through what you did, to be any different?<\/li>\n<li>If not, then why put such an expectation upon yourself?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now I\u2019m not trying to justify you being constantly anxious here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m just trying to suggest to you that your expectations shape the meaning you place on how you show up in relationships.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you try to hide the maladaptive coping mechanisms, or expect perfection from yourself, you\u2019ll just perpetuate the cycle of shame.<\/p>\n<p>Shame is the biggest secret of anxious attachment style. Of course most anxious people experience far too much shame.<\/p>\n<p>So anything that perpetuates the cycle of shame is counterproductive to healing.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, shame does serve a purpose in human life when it\u2019s calibrated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, you should feel ashamed for deliberately harming someone else. That\u2019s fair, wouldn\u2019t you say?<\/p>\n<p>But feeling shame for having a desire for emotional closeness and intimacy as a baby and never ultimately receiving it is not really deserving of shame, is it?<\/p>\n<p>So what we want to do is free you from chronic shame as much as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><video width=\"100%\" autoplay=\"\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.thefemininewoman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WMPA-GIF.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\"><\/source><\/video><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Heal_Anxious_Attachment_And_Become_Confident\"\/>How to Heal Anxious Attachment And Become Confident<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Tell yourself that you are this way because it was the best adaptation to life that was available to you, given the lack of nurturing you received in your first 1 to 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>Even though anxious attachment is a maladaptive response to stress, it\u2019s just an attempt to secure emotional safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an attempt to protect your own life and your own relationships because they really meant so much to you.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s certainly a lot better and a lot more manageable than if you had gone to the extreme end of avoidant attachment style, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>But we don\u2019t want to make avoidants wrong here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We just want to appreciate that your nervous system did the very best it could for the environment it was forced into.<\/p>\n<p>So don\u2019t expect yourself to never be anxious.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, expect yourself to have hiccups. Expect yourself to occasionally feel so much fear that you blow things out of proportion.<\/p>\n<p>I know it\u2019s not nice to hear. But this is what anxious attachment is. You can\u2019t heal it by ignoring it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember the analogy of the gaping wound?
