Tucked along a quiet stretch of New York’s Thompson Street, with its graceful Sawtooth oaks and Chinese elms, sits The Manner, an aptly-named boutique hotel that manages to feel both dignified, as its name suggests, and like a home away from home (but a very, very stylish one). In this sense, The Manner contains multitudes, as does the hotel’s eye-catching design, which is as bold and eclectic as it is sophisticated. Blink twice, and you might mistake some of its spaces for an exceptionally posh apartment.<\/p>\n

Operated by Standard International, which Hyatt acquired in 2024, The Manner certainly doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter points hotel; rather, it’s about as design-forward and distinct as they come, which tracks, as the curation was helmed by Milan-based Hannes Peer in collaboration with Standard International’s Verena Haller. With tasteful nods to the timelessness of New York and midcentury modernism (inspired by the likes of Gio Ponti), the hotel’s public spaces and guest rooms are replete with a stunning collection of art and decor, all of which tell a story as layered as the city it calls home.<\/p>\n

Here are five reasons The Manner deserves a spot on your New York City hotel bucket list.<\/p>\n

I am both a nostalgic person and a fan of hotels that embrace old school sensibilities (there are intentionally no TVs in the rooms). If you’re the same way, you’ll probably feel right at home here \u2014 and who needs a TV with a view like that?<\/p>\n

The theme of midcentury modernism is threaded throughout guest rooms (of which there are 97, including suites). Our Deluxe Corner King Room featured a long, low, window-facing velvet couch that sat beneath a glass chandelier, custom-designed by Peer. A warm and vibrant color palette complemented retro touches like the lacquered red headboard (matching that of the lobby staircase), and glimmering gold accents paired well with a playful mix of textures and materials throughout the space.<\/p>\n

The king-size bed, replete with soft white linens, was one of the coziest I’ve ever slept in (and has now joined the top ranks of my favorite hotel beds of all time).<\/p>\n

Just off the bedroom, next to the primary door and a small but practical closet, the bathroom was a chic situation, though sleeker in look and feel than the bedroom. It featured dark-veined marble tiling, dimmable globe lights, glints of gold hardware, fluffy bathrobes and luxe bath products from sustainable brand Costa Brazil.<\/p>\n

Though small, it was certainly just enough space for a two-night stay.<\/p>\n

With three dining outlets, a guest-only lounge and an in-room dining menu, culinary experiences are aplenty at The Manner, considering the size of the hotel. I wasn’t sure what to expect of the food, but I’m happy to report it blew me away \u2014 in fact, I’d go back for another stay just to enjoy the breakfast again, as well as a few special bites highlighted below.<\/p>\n

Sloan’s, the hotel’s in-house cocktail bar, is a whole<\/em> vibe. While some might mistake its seductive atmosphere for sceney-ness, it’s anything but. Step through a hanging velvet curtain and it feels like you’ve discovered a hideaway for those who prefer not<\/em> to be seen (and would rather tuck away with a dirty martini and a dozen oysters).<\/p>\n

With a discreet location on the second floor, the dimly lit interiors feature sumptuous fabrics (such as velvet curtains and leather upholstery in rich hues) and a sleek bar that sits in front of an entire wall adorned with hand-applied gold leaf. We sat down for some light snacks, which turned out to be so delicious that we skipped a dinner reservation elsewhere and stuck to the menu, which I thought was delightfully playful for such an elevated atmosphere. Favorites included oysters on the half shell ($28), chicken nuggets ($24) and beef sliders with American cheese ($9).<\/p>\n

The Otter<\/h3>\n

The Otter is the hotel’s primary dining outlet and a charming neighborhood restaurant where chef Alex Stupak serves a seafood-focused menu against the backdrop of stunning murals inspired by New York’s own heritage, the French Riviera in the mid-1900s and Italian Mediterranean modernism. (The restaurant was closed during my stay, so I’ll have to visit again to try it firsthand.)<\/p>\n

Breakfast in bed at a hotel is always a treat, but I can’t say all hotel in-room dining menus are the same \u2014 even when it comes to luxury properties. The quality of the food on The Manner’s in-room dining menu was truly impressive, with expertly prepared, flavorful dishes arriving hot and on time.<\/p>\n

Breakfast, in particular, was delicious, and we enjoyed classics like piping hot cappuccinos ($8), two beautifully poached eggs ($19), chicken sausage ($10) and mixed berries ($10). For dinner in the room one night, a lemony gem lettuce Caesar salad ($20) and dry-aged NY strip steak ($74) wowed us, too. But the real star of the show was a life-changing Boston cream pie ($19) that I long for to this day (I nearly asked if I could order it for breakfast the next morning).<\/p>\n

Guests can enjoy exclusive access to a rooftop bar and stylish lounge<\/h2>\n

It’s always fun where there’s a little bit of exclusivity at a hotel \u2014 and while some of The Manner’s restaurants are accessible to all, The Rooftop and The Apartment are reserved exclusively for guests.<\/p>\n

THE MANNER<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Rooftop, which I luckily caught on its last weekend before closing during the winter months, offers a small bar with cozy, retro-chic seating and breathtaking views of Manhattan. This definitely felt like one of the buzziest places to hang out at the hotel, especially in the evening. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine and small plates that weren’t as impressive as the other dining options on-property, but were fine to snack on over drinks (we were there for the views and the vibes, anyway).<\/p>\n

The Apartment<\/h3>\n

Described by the hotel as “a private social sanctuary,” The Apartment is a lounge-style space on the building’s second floor accessible only to guests. This area feels (perhaps obviously) like the most apartment-style space, featuring a cool collection of coffee table and art books, mirrored walls, lots of patterns and eclectic design pieces, and plenty of comfortable seating to enjoy something to eat (food is available throughout the day).<\/p>\n

It lends itself to both peaceful relaxation or socializing, though it never seemed too busy during my stay. Guests can enjoy The Manner’s signature Negroni here during aperitivo hours daily from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.<\/p>\n

The location is quiet but feels close to the heart of Soho<\/h2>\n

It’s hard to beat a Soho location, where much of Manhattan’s best dining, shopping, art and culture is at your fingertips. And because The Manner sits on a relatively quiet block of Thompson Street, you have access to all that this lively neighborhood has to offer without compromising a relaxing atmosphere. In just a few minutes on foot, you’ll find iconic restaurants like Dante, Balthazar and Sadelle’s, as well as sought-after reservations like The Corner Store. Art galleries in the area are aplenty, including The Judd Foundation and The Drawing Center.<\/p>\n

Nearby subway lines include Spring Street station (C and E trains), Canal Street station (A, C and E trains) and Prince Street station (R and W trains).<\/p>\n

Best of all, the property is bookable using World of Hyatt points<\/h2>\n

Cash rates at The Manner will vary by season and demand, but I found rates as low as $488 for the next six months.<\/p>\n

As a Category 8 World of Hyatt property, standard award availability starts at 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night.<\/p>\n

When booking The Manner, you’ll want to use one of the credit cards that earn the most points for Hyatt stays, as well as one that possibly offers automatic World of Hyatt elite status for value-added benefits. These include:<\/p>\n

Accessibility at The Manner<\/h2>\n

The Manner’s public spaces are ADA-compliant, and the hotel has five ADA-compliant guest rooms which feature lowered thermostat and light switches, lowered peephole and door latch, wider doorways and fully accessible bathrooms.<\/p>\n

There are so many fabulous hotels in New York City, and it’s always fun to discover a new one that makes my short list. I certainly can’t wait to return to The Manner to enjoy the stunning rooftop views, one of my now-favorite hotel beds, the moody vibes at Sloane’s and the best Boston cream pie I’ve ever had.<\/p>\n

If you’re a Hyatt loyalist in search of a luxe-yet-attainable stay in the city, or someone who appreciates a balance of elegance, high design and nostalgia, I highly recommend The Manner, perhaps the coolest kid in Soho.<\/p>\n
