Certain ingredients help keep vaccines safe from contamination and toxins. Others, like stabilizers, help vaccines stay effective for a long time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make the vaccine more effective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong\/>All vaccine ingredients help to make a vaccine as effective as possible, while being safe. Antibiotics that people are most likely to be allergic to\u2014like penicillin\u2014aren&#8217;t used in vaccines.\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level-1\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong> Neomycin, Kanamycin, Streptomycin\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"heading-6wf8tqyr0j\">Preservatives<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"nested-list\">\n<li class=\"level-1\"><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> To prevent contamination\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level-1\"><strong>Most commonly found in:<\/strong> Some kinds of fish\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level-1\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> Thimerosal (only in multi-dose vials of flu vaccine)\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dfe-section\" data-section=\"cdc_generic_section_3\">\n\t<!-- --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"editor-block--title\" id=\"heading-kci0ofdysc\">Most vaccines don&#8217;t contain any mercury<\/h2>\n<p>Most vaccines do not have any mercury in them. However, multi-dose flu vaccines and one type of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine contain a small amount of thimerosal. Thimerosal contains a form of mercury (ethylmercury) that does not cause mercury poisoning and is safe for use in vaccines. Flu and Td vaccines are also available in thimerosal-free versions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dfe-block cdc-callout cdc-callout--data\">\n<h3 class=\"cdc-callout__heading\">Different types of vaccines work in different ways<\/h3>\n<div class=\"cdc-callout__body\">\n<div class=\"cdc-callout__content\">\n<p>Vaccines can help protect against certain diseases by imitating an infection.
