JAKARTA, Feb 19 (Reuters) – Alphabet Inc’s Google and Southeast Asian technology conglomerate Sea Ltd announced \u200ca new tie-up on Thursday that will \u200cdevelop artificial intelligence tools for Sea’s e-commerce and gaming products.<\/p>\n
Under \u200bthe newly-signed strategic partnership, the two companies will jointly “explore the building of an AI agentic shopping prototype” on Sea’s e-commerce platform Shopee, they said in \u200ca statement.<\/p>\n
The move \u2060is part of the efforts by global tech firms to monetise their AI \u2060models by promoting capabilities beyond simply answering questions and executing a much wider range of tasks \u200bfrom shopping \u200bon different apps to \u200bmanaging complex workflows.<\/p>\n
China’s Alibaba, \u200cwhose Lazada e-commerce platform competes with Shopee in Southeast Asia, released a new AI model earlier this week that it described as being built “for the agentic AI era.”<\/p>\n
Shopee was the most dominant \u200ce-commerce platform in Southeast Asia \u200bwith a 52% market share \u200bin 2024, according \u200bto a report by consultancy Momentum \u200cWorks.<\/p>\n
Google and Sea’s gaming unit \u200bGarena will \u200balso use AI solutions to “transform” the productivity of game development, both companies said.<\/p>\n
The partnerships follow \u200ba 2024 \u200ctie-up between Shopee and Alphabet’s YouTube in the \u200bSoutheast Asian e-commerce market.<\/p>\n
