Taylor Sheridan<\/strong>, who created an incredibly successful TV empire with hit shows such as Yellowstone<\/em> and Landman<\/em>, has also faced his fair share of ups and downs off screen.<\/p>\n

Sheridan\u2019s career started with him acting in front of the camera before pivoting to screenwriting and producing his own projects. His big break came when he worked on Sicario, Hell or High Water <\/em>and Wind River<\/em>. From there, the self-proclaimed cowboy created Yellowstone<\/em> for Paramount Network, which starred Kevin Costner<\/strong> as the patriarch of a fictional family of ranchers in Montana.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I don\u2019t know that it\u2019s flattering [how invested Paramount is], because I don\u2019t think they\u2019re doing it because \u2018Yellowstone\u2019 is good,\u201d Sheridan told Variety<\/em> in 2022. \u201cThey\u2019re doing it because 15 million people watch it. And they\u2019re like: \u2018A lot of people watch Westerns. Let\u2019s make Westerns.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Sheridan reflected on showcasing the American experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur job as artists is to hold a mirror up to the world and let people see the reflection, to teach them about a part of life and human experience that they may not be aware of,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhenever we\u2019re ignorant of something, then typically we fear it, or we judge it, or we dislike it. And it\u2019s the job of all artists, I think, to try and find these little pockets of the world and show some humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yellowstone<\/em> ultimately evolved into a franchise with seven spinoffs in various stages of development. Sheridan took it one step further with shows not in the Yellowstone<\/em> universe: Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Lioness, Landman<\/em> and The Road<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Despite the continued professional success, Sheridan made headlines for drama behind the scenes including alleged issues with stars of his shows, his approach when it comes to developing each project and more.<\/p>\n

Sheridan got his start as an actor with roles on Veronica Mars<\/em> and Sons of Anarchy<\/em>. He went on to write scripts for movies such as Sicario, Hell or High Water<\/em> and Wind River<\/em>. He transitioned to the small screen with Yellowstone<\/em>, which premiered in 2017 and introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana.<\/p>\n

Since Yellowstone<\/em> became a hit series, spinoffs such as 1883 <\/em>and 1923<\/em> were picked up by the network. Sheridan previously discussed the dedication that goes into telling authentic stories on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it is so hard, physically, on the actors, on the crew, I feel like the shots look earned. And because Paramount trusts me and gives me the time to go shoot 10 to 14 days for a television episode, we can treat it like a movie, and it looks like a movie,\u201d he told Deadline in January 2022. \u201cWe can take the time to rehearse it and light it and build these set pieces. And if I call them and say, \u2018I need two helicopters in one day,\u2019 they just go, \u2018Alright.\u200b\u200b\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAt the end of the day, to go to some of these locations where most people have never been, where you\u2019re opening up a new world, and all of these places or characters in the story, to me, it\u2019s fascinating.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prolific producer has been married to Muirbrook since 2013. The couple, who share a son, reside in Texas and have offered glimpses at their romance on social media. In honor of their seventh wedding anniversary, Muirbrook gushed about their relationship.<\/p>\n

Taylor Sheridan Dealing With the Decline of \u2018Yellowstone\u2019<\/h2>\n

Paramount confirmed in 2023 that Yellowstone<\/em> would be coming to an end \u2014 for good \u2014 at the end of season 5. This stemmed from lead Kevin Costner not returning for the second half of the final season to shift his focus to directing and acting in Horizon: An American Saga<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Followers of the show were familiar with speculation that Costner and Sheridan had a falling out over the direction of the show. Sheridan, for his part, slammed claims he was at odds with Costner.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn\u2019t altered,\u201d Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. \u201cHis creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful \u2026 and I\u2019ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn\u2019t work out on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan also slammed a report that claimed he told Costner to \u201cstick to acting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never had that conversation with Kevin,\u201d Sheridan said. \u201cThere was a time in season 2 when he was very upset and said the character wasn\u2019t going in the direction he wanted. \u2026 Kevin felt season 2 was deviating from that, and I don\u2019t know that he was wrong. In season 3, we steered back into it. And I recall him winning a Golden Globe last year for his performance, so I think it\u2019s working.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Sheridan hinted that he was now on different terms with Costner.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce lawyers get involved, then people don\u2019t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren\u2019t true and attempt to shift blame,\u201d he noted. \u201cHe took a lot of this on the chin and I don\u2019t know that anyone deserves it. [Horizon] seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it \u2014 and that it\u2019s a good one.\u201d<\/p>\n

After previously living in his wife\u2019s native Utah, Sheridan and Muirbrook relocated to Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were living in Park City, and Taylor really didn\u2019t like the snow,\u201d Muirbrook said in an interview with Cowgirl Magazine in 2021. \u201cSo, he rolled over one morning and said, \u2018Honey, we\u2019re getting the hell out of here,\u2019 and I\u2019m like \u2018Where are we going?\u2019 \u2018We\u2019re going to go to Texas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair currently own two Texas ranches: the Bosque Ranch and the 6666 Ranch a.k.a the Four Sixes. Sheridan has used both locations as the backdrop for Yellowstone and its subsequent spinoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have 12 dogs, some chickens, and cats because I love to rescue,\u201d Muirbrook added in 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to have the space to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2021, Sheridan was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and three years later he was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

After making Wind River, Sheridan credited the film with the 2022 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which \u201cexpand[ed] special criminal jurisdiction of Tribal courts to cover non-Native perpetrators of sexual assault, child abuse, stalking, sex trafficking and assaults on tribal law enforcement officers on tribal lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the movie\u2019s alleged impact.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The film] actually changed a law, where you can now be prosecuted if you\u2019re a U.S. citizen for committing rape on an Indian reservation, and there\u2019s now a database for [Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, or MMIW],\u201d he claimed in 2023. \u201cThat law had a profound impact. All social change begins with the artist, and that\u2019s the responsibility you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attorney Mary Kathryn Nagle<\/strong>, who is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, slammed Sheridan\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cSheridan\u2019s attempt to take credit for the passage of VAWA is gross and completely discredits years of tireless advocacy from the Native community,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cHis movie Wind River perpetuates the myth that the FBI investigates MMIW cases. They do not. Sheridan should be apologizing, not taking credit for a victory secured by Indian Country advocates and led by Native women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheridan was also asked by THR in 2023 about taking sole credit \u2014 or a co byline \u2014 on every episode of Yellowstone and later some of his other TV shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided that I am going to tell my stories my way, period,\u201d he said amid the WGA strike. \u201cI don\u2019t really give a s*** what a line producer or some physical production person thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the Paramount Network series premiered in June 2018, actors along with cocreator Taylor Sheridan have fended off criticism that the show is written with [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Reports originally claimed Costner\u2019s strict schedule demands caused issues behind the scenes that resulted in his exit from Yellowstone<\/em>. Sheridan himself hinted at a breakdown in communication with Costner.<\/p>\n

The actor, meanwhile, told Deadline in 2024 that he would have been happy to return for the second half of Yellowstone\u2019s final season \u2014 if the scripts had been ready. \u201cI was straight up with [Sheridan], and he said what we would do, and I believed him, and we didn\u2019t get there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Taylor Sheridan\u2019s Lawsuit Against Yellowstone\u2019s Cole Hauser<\/h2>\n

Us Weekly confirmed in December 2023 that Sheridan\u2019s Bosque Ranch filed a lawsuit against Hauser\u2019s coffee company, Free Rein, for trademark infringement, unfair competition and false advertising.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit alleged that Hauser\u2019s coffee brand has a logo which seems similar to Sheridan\u2019s \u201cB and R\u201d design for his ranch. Sheridan claimed that Free Rein is \u201cconfusingly similar\u201d to his brand and \u201cconstitutes false and misleading descriptions of fact that are likely to cause confusion or to cause mistake\u201d as to which goods are associated with Bosque Ranch, which was founded nearly 20 years ago.<\/p>\n

Sheridan went on to point out that Bosque Ranch publicly announced a new craft coffee centered around the \u201ccowboy way of life\u201d in June 2023. The screenwriter questioned the timing of Hauser\u2019s brand, which was launched \u201ca little over three months\u201d later. According to the legal paperwork, Hauser, who played Rip on Yellowstone, did \u201cnot receive permission or authorization\u201d from Sheridan.<\/p>\n

The filing requested that Hauser\u2019s company stop using the Free Rein brand and \u201cdestroy all products, marketing and promotional materials\u201d that relate to their brand. Bosque Ranch also noted that they expect Free Rein to pay \u201ccompensatory damages\u201d because Free Rein is \u201cirreparably damaging\u201d Sheridan\u2019s business.<\/p>\n

Hauser didn\u2019t file a response to the lawsuit and one month later, Sheridan\u2019s legal team requested the suit be dismissed.<\/p>\n
