\n\tIranian director Jafar Panahi kicked off the 38th European Film Awards in Berlin on Saturday with an impassioned plea asking the world not to remain silent in the wake of the massacre unfolding in Iran.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis film It Was Just An Accident<\/em> is one of the hot contenders at this year\u2019s edition taking place in its new January slot placing it at the heart of the awards season. <\/p>\n

\n\tNorwegian director Joachim Trier\u2019s Cannes Grand Prix winner Sentimental Value<\/em> is the frontrunner with nominations in the best film, director and screenplay, while co-stars Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd are nominated for best actress and actor, respectively.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther strong contenders include Oliver Laxe\u2019s Morocco-set drama Sir\u0101t<\/em> with four nominations, followed by Mascha Schilinski\u2019s debut film Sound of Falling and Panahi\u2019s It Was Just An Accident<\/em> with three nominations each.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn first awards, Laura Carreira\u2019s On Falling <\/em>won the European Discovery \u2013 Prix FIPRESCI, while the European Young Audience Award went to Greta Scarano\u2019s Siblings<\/em>. <\/p>\n
