A reported 173 rounds were shot during the mass shooting. The shooter was eventually killed by a team of US Border Patrol agents more than an hour after the shooting started.<\/p>\n<p>In his testimony, Texas Ranger <strong>Nick Hill<\/strong> argued Gonzales had just over one minute between the time that he parked his car and when the shooter entered the school, according to ABC News.<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-related article link-related__with-thumb\">\n<figure class=\"article__figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/zoe-welsh.png?w=400&amp;h=225&amp;crop=1&amp;quality=86&amp;strip=all\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 400px, (max-width: 770px) calc(100vw - 6em), 200px\" alt=\"Zoe Welsh\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" data-fallback-img=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/zoe-welsh.png?quality=86&amp;strip=all\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<h3 class=\"article__title\">\n<p>    <span class=\"related-badge\">Related: <\/span><span class=\"related-title\">North Carolina Cops Make Arrest in Murder of Beloved Science Teacher<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tA much-loved North Carolina science teacher, who was murdered during a home invasion over the weekend, was actually on the phone with 911 dispatchers when her killer began his attack. Police confirmed to Us Weekly in a statement on Sunday, January 4, that Zoe Welsh called 911 at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Going through the events minute-by-minute, Hill claimed Gonzales parked his vehicle at 11:31 a.m. and called in the active shooter report in less than 30 seconds after arriving at 11:32 a.m. The shooter then allegedly entered the school building at 11:32 and 59 seconds, and he was reportedly inside of the first classroom at 11:33 and 45 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzales reportedly did not walk into the school until 11:35 and 48 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Per the indictment, the former officer is charged with 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment and is accused of failing to \u201cto engage, distract or delay the shooter\u201d in accordance with standard active shooter training.<\/p>\n<p>Jury selection for the case began on January 5, with opening statements and witness testimony in the high-profile trial started the following day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-related article link-related__with-thumb\">\n<figure class=\"article__figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/lance-raines.jpg?w=400&amp;h=225&amp;crop=1&amp;quality=86&amp;strip=all\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 400px, (max-width: 770px) calc(100vw - 6em), 200px\" alt=\"Lance Rains\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" data-fallback-img=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/lance-raines.jpg?quality=86&amp;strip=all\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<h3 class=\"article__title\">\n<p>    <span class=\"related-badge\">Related: <\/span><span class=\"related-title\">Texas Cold Case Solved as Killer Confesses to Murdering a Father and Daughter<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tA 2018 double-murder that had stymied Texas investigators for many years has at long last been solved after the alleged killer is said to have confessed, according to the Henderson County Sheriff\u2019s Office. Lance Kaeden Rains, 25, was taken into custody on Saturday, January 10, after reportedly confessing to the shooting deaths of Beverly McBride, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Wednesday, January 14, <strong>Melodye Flores<\/strong>, who formerly served as a teacher\u2019s aide at Robb Elementary School, gave her own emotional testimony in which she alleged that she\u2019d begged Gonzales for help, but he allegedly \u201cjust stayed there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him that he [the shooter] needed to get stopped before he went into the fourth-grade building,\u201d she told the court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>When prosecutor <strong>Bill Turner<\/strong> questioned her on Gonzales\u2019 response, she alleged that he said \u201cjust, nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cLike I said, that\u2019s when I ran to see if everybody else was in (the school) and found a place (to hide).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked how many times she urged Gonzales to go into the school and \u201cdo something\u201d about the situation, Flores replied that she asked him to help two or three times.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news-block\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form  \">\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup__success\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<h3>Thank You!<\/h3>\n<p>You have successfully subscribed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>However, Gonzales\u2019 legal team argued that other officers arrived on site at almost the same time as Gonzales. They believe the situation was indicative of a failure by the local police force on a much larger scale than just one man\u2019s actions alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose precious souls were stolen by a monster that day, but that monster was not Adrian [Gonzales],\u201d Gonzales defense lawyer, <strong>Nico LaHood<\/strong>, told ABC affiliate KSAT in San Antonio. \u201cHe was there, he was present. He was going into danger. And so the narrative of the government is something we\u2019re going to contest highly, and that\u2019s going to be the point of contention before this jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gonzales pleaded not guilty to all charges.
