March 10 (Reuters) – Meta Platforms (META) will charge advertisers a location fee ranging \u200cfrom 2% to 5% to cover digital \u200cservice taxes imposed by some countries, the U.S. tech giant said \u200bin a post on its website, following in the footsteps of Alphabet’s Google and Amazon.<\/p>\n
The fee, for image or video ads delivered on Meta platforms including WhatsApp \u200cclick-to-message campaigns and \u2060marketing messages together with ads, will apply from July 1 and will also \u2060cover other government-imposed levies.<\/p>\n
“Until now, Meta has covered these additional costs. These changes are part of Meta’s \u200bongoing effort \u200bto respond to the \u200bevolving regulatory landscape and \u200calign with industry standards,” the company said in the blog.<\/p>\n
The location fees are determined by where the audience is located and not the advertisers’ business location.<\/p>\n
Meta listed six countries where the fees will apply, \u200cranging from 2% in the \u200bUnited Kingdom to 3% in \u200bFrance, Italy and \u200bSpain and 5% in Austria and Turkey.<\/p>\n
Digital \u200ctaxes, levied as a \u200bpercentage of the \u200brevenue earned by big tech companies in the individual countries, have drawn criticism from the \u200bU.S. administration, which \u200csaid it discriminates against U.S. companies.<\/p>\n
Bloomberg was \u200bthe first to report about Meta’s new location \u200bfees.<\/p>\n
