Former Bachelorette<\/em> star Katie Thurston<\/strong>\u2019s mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cLife update: my mom has #breastcancer. I flew to Seattle this weekend to be with her at her first appointment,\u201d the reality TV star announced via Instagram on Monday, January 19, alongside a carousel featuring the same throwback photo of the mother-daughter with additional information about her mom\u2019s diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to make sure she is getting proper care and information,\u201d Thurston, 35, continued. \u201cI hate that we have to be our biggest advocate but also, it\u2019s what will save our life. Dense breast need more than a mammogram to screen for cancer and yet somehow my mom had never been referred for further imaging. We are getting more answers today but I believe our own advocacy allowed us to catch this early.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued in the comments section, \u201cIf you have [a] family history of breast cancer or dense breasts \u2013 please request further imaging such as a breast ultrasound or breast MRI.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFormer Bachelorette Katie Thurston has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is \u201cready to fight\u201d the disease. \u201cLife update: I have breast cancer,\u201d Thurston, 34, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, February 15. \u201cYesterday I saw all the couples post their Valentine\u2019s Day celebrations. I felt envious if I\u2019m being honest. Jeff [Arcuri] took me to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the carousel of the same photo, Thurston further elaborated on how her mother received her diagnosis, first revealing that she got the news \u201ca few weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago. But it wasn\u2019t her doctors who discovered it,\u201d the first photo read, while the second added, \u201cShe just had her mammogram in December where her results said \u2018negative\u2019 and \u2018probably benign.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The rest of the photos explained, \u201cThey also noted her dense breasts but didn\u2019t recommend further imaging. They told her to come back in a year for her annual mammogram. They never suggested a breast ultrasound. I told her to ask for a breast ultrasound. Ultrasounds can find cancer hidden within dense breasts. During her breast ultrasound, they found suspicious masses. They scheduled a breast MRI & performed biopsies.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Thurston, the star of 2021\u2019s season 17 of the hit reality dating show, her mother was diagnosed with cancer \u201cwithin two weeks of her \u2018normal\u2019 mammogram and her advocating for herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement comes nearly one year after Thurston revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a small lump in my breast around the 10\u2019oclock [sic] spot,\u201d she wrote via her Instagram Stories in February 2025. \u201cI discovered it myself. Thought maybe it was my period [or] maybe it was muscle soreness from working out. But, eventually, this lump never went away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAn emotional Katie Thurston opened up about her mental state as she fights cancer. Taking to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, September 30, the former Bachelorette, 34, cried as she spoke to fans about how she is coping after being diagnosed with breast cancer in February. \u201cTomorrow is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I\u2019m, like, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In March 2025, Thurston left L.A. to live in New York City full-time before starting fertility treatments that would allow her to freeze embryos before undergoing chemotherapy and eventual surgery.<\/p>\n
