The parents of a Canadian woman found dead on a remote Australian island say they are struggling to comprehend the loss as authorities investigate whether she drowned or was attacked by dingoes.<\/p>\n
Piper James, 19, was discovered early Monday morning on a beach on K\u2019gari, a World Heritage sand island off Queensland, close to the Maheno shipwreck.<\/p>\n
Police said her body was found surrounded by a pack of dingoes, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of her death.<\/p>\n
A post-mortem examination began this week, with the Queensland Coroner tasked with determining whether the teenager died after entering the ocean, from injuries caused by wild animals, or from another cause.<\/p>\n
Officials say further forensic testing will be required before a conclusion can be drawn.<\/p>\n
For her family, the wait is agonising. \u201cOur hearts are shattered as we share the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter Piper,\u201d Todd James said on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will always remember her infectious laugh and her kind spirit. I admired her strength and determination to go after her dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said his daughter was thrilled about travelling to Australia and cherished the friendships she had formed along the way.<\/p>\n
The teenager had been living and working on K\u2019gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, for six weeks, employed as a housekeeper at a backpacker campsite alongside a close friend from her hometown in British Columbia.<\/p>\n
Queensland police said the friend had been left \u201chighly traumatised\u201d by the incident.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, Piper was last seen alive at around 5am on Monday when she told people at the hostel that she planned to go to the beach. Her body was found by two men driving along the island\u2019s eastern shoreline.<\/p>\n
Her mother, Angela James, told Canadian media she had spoken to her daughter shortly before she went out that morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was just so special. She was just so precious. She was so empathetic. Always worried about other people,\u201d she told The Canadian Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n
Her daughter was relishing her time in Australia and had fallen in love with K\u2019gari, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was very adventurous. She loved motocross. She loved camping, she loved swimming, and she loved surfing. She wanted to learn to surf,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/em>, the mother said: \u201cWhen I didn\u2019t hear from her, I didn\u2019t think anything of it. I knew she didn\u2019t have a phone. That morning she borrowed her girlfriend\u2019s phone to go down to the beach and they haven\u2019t found her girlfriend\u2019s phone.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cOnce I heard that Piper was not OK, I don\u2019t clearly remember much after that. I remember just dropping to the floor and just screaming and just going into shock.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before travelling overseas, the teenager had spent two summers working with British Columbia\u2019s wildfire services, something her father said she took immense pride in.<\/p>\n
Friends and family have been sharing images of her rafting, snowboarding, riding dirt bikes and firefighting, reflecting what her parents described as a fearless approach to life.<\/p>\n
Her grandmother, Penny Vanalstine Marshall, also paid tribute. Her granddaughter, she said, had \u201ca spirit of unbridled joy and courage\u201d.<\/p>\n\n
