March 23 (Reuters) – Alphabet (GOOG)-owned Wing plans to begin delivering packages by drone to homes in California’s San Francisco \u200cBay Area in the coming months, it said on \u200cMonday, extending its rollout to one of its earliest testing grounds.<\/p>\n
Wing is seeking \u200bto scale what it says is a solution to the hurdles facing last-mile delivery of small household items and meals by using lightweight, automated drones designed to fly directly to homes in \u200cdense residential areas.<\/p>\n
The expansion \u2060marks a return to the roots for the company, which was founded in the Bay Area \u2060in 2012 as part of Alphabet’s X.<\/p>\n
X is Alphabet\u2019s “Moonshot Factory,” a research unit that takes on experimental projects such as self-driving \u200bfirm Waymo, \u200band helps spin them into \u200bindependent companies.<\/p>\n
Wing provides drone delivery \u200cfor Walmart groceries and household essentials in under 30 minutes in some U.S. states. With DoorDash, it offers rapid food delivery from restaurant chains such as Wendy\u2019s and Panera.<\/p>\n
The company has completed more than 750,000 deliveries to date, and serves more \u200cthan two million customers across parts \u200bof the U.S., it said.<\/p>\n
The Bay \u200bArea rollout comes as \u200bWing pushes to build a logistics network focused \u200con small and local deliveries, while \u200bworking to broaden \u200badoption beyond early pilot markets.<\/p>\n
The company also started a pilot program with Serve Robotics in October 2024, in which \u200bServe’s on-ground robots \u200cpicked up food from restaurants and transferred it to \u200bWing drones for aerial delivery.<\/p>\n
