Rory McIlroy<\/strong> just made golf history \u2014 again. But honestly? His mom might have stolen the show.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old won his second straight green jacket at the 2026 Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 13, beating Scottie Scheffler<\/strong> by one shot. That alone is a massive deal.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s now just the fourth golfer ever to win back-to-back Masters, joining Jack Nicklaus<\/strong> (1965\u20131966), Nick Faldo<\/strong> (1989\u20131990) and Tiger Woods<\/strong> (2001\u20132002).<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the family story behind this win that has the internet in its feelings.<\/p>\n

During the final round, eagle-eyed fans spotted something special sitting next to Rory McIlroy\u2019s mom, Rosie McIlroy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was a custom purse \u2014 and it featured a print of last year\u2019s New York Times<\/em> newspaper article that announced her son\u2019s career grand slam after his first Augusta win.<\/p>\n

A whole handbag dedicated to her son\u2019s greatest achievement? That\u2019s elite mom energy. Social media ate it up.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy\u2019s Mom Almost Didn\u2019t Attend the Masters<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s the thing \u2014 Rory\u2019s parents, Rosie and Gerry<\/strong> McIlroy<\/strong>, weren\u2019t even supposed to be there.<\/p>\n

They missed last year\u2019s Masters entirely because they had just bought a home in Ireland and were busy moving in during tournament week. Rory won anyway.<\/p>\n

So naturally, his parents became convinced their absence was the good luck charm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich they said was a good thing,\u201d Rory said in 2025 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, per USA Today. \u201cThey were glad they had something to do to take their mind off of what was happening at the Masters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rory confirmed during the green jacket ceremony that it took real effort to get them to Augusta this time around.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey weren\u2019t here last year to celebrate with us, and surprisingly, I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought the reason that I won was because they weren\u2019t here. I\u2019m glad that we proved that wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

After sinking his winning putt, Rory walked straight to his family. First, his daughter Poppy. Then his wife, Erica Stoll<\/strong>. Then his parents.<\/p>\n

McIlroy, 36, was joined by his wife, Erica Stoll, and their 5-year-old daughter, Poppy, at the Augusta National Golf Club on Wednesday, April 8. Stoll, 38, and Poppy twinned in caddie uniforms that featured McIlroy\u2019s [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In an interview with Jim Nantz<\/strong> and Fred Ridley<\/strong>, he explained the superstition that almost kept them away.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the second Major win my mum has been at, she was at Hoylake in 2014 so there was a piece of them that didn\u2019t want to come this year, because they didn\u2019t come last year and maybe that was the reason [that I won],\u201d he said, per the Irish Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

During his post-ceremony press conference, Rory revealed he had to fight back emotions while still playing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI caught myself a couple of times on the golf course thinking about them, and I was like \u2018No, not yet, not yet\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
