Dublin conference to hear of medical and psychosocial needs of young people with cancer<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
For the first time in history young adults are seeing cancer rates climb faster than older adults, an international cancer conference held in Ireland will hear this week.<\/p>\n
According to the National Cancer Registry, the incidence of colorectal early onset cancer in Ireland has seen a 171.3 per cent increase between 1994 and 2022. There has been an 87.5 per cent increase in early onset oesophageal cancers, while gastric cases rose 44.1 per cent during that timeframe.<\/p>\n
Young adults born in 1990 are twice as likely to get colorectal cancer as those born in 1950. By 2030, colorectal cancer in 20\u201334-year-olds globally is projected to increase by 90 per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven that early-onset cancers, and early-onset colorectal cancer in particular, are diseases with increasing incidence that affect a largely unscreened population, along with the corresponding psycho-social impact they generate, all our efforts must focus on transforming research and clinical care by generating new knowledge about this subgroup of early-onset cancers,\u201d said Dr Jose Perea-Garcia, Professor of Surgery at the European University of Madrid.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy improving our understanding of the underlying risk and biological mechanisms, progressive findings can contribute to more precise prevention and earlier detection to identify population at risk of developing this subtype of cancer, and improved treatment strategies, with potential implications for colorectal cancer in general.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Perea-Garcia, a lead researcher for the Global Early Onset Colorectal Cancer Consortium (GEOCODE), will be among the speakers at the thirteenth International Cancer Conference, which is taking place today and tomorrow at Trinity College Dublin.<\/p>\n
Young onset tumours, especially in colon cancer, is now the leading cause of cancer-related death for men and women under 50 in the US.<\/p>\n
The Trinity St James\u2019s Cancer Institute opened a Young Onset Cancer Centre in 2025 to address the identify and address the complex needs of our young patients with the disease.<\/p>\n
This centre specifically addresses the challenges faced by this cohort of patients, with a holistic focus on broader impacts on this cohort on areas like fertility, employment and family life.<\/p>\n
The programme for the cancer conference includes sessions on cancer screening and prevention, molecular and precision oncology, cancer immunology, and living with and beyond cancer.<\/p>\n
Other areas to be addressed include the use of liquid biopsies and the importance of research and education in comprehensive cancer care.<\/p>\n
The Burkitt Lecture will be delivered at the conference by Prof Charles Swanton, who will be awarded a Burkitt Medal at the conference dinner. Prof Swanton is a clinician who focuses his work on understanding the challenges inherent in the management of metastatic cancer and their drug resistant and incurable nature.<\/p>\n
Denis Burkitt, internationally renowned for his pioneering work including the discovery of Burkitt\u2019s lymphoma, was a Trinity graduate.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
