My body failed before my brain. I am of sound mind as I write this January 1, 2026. If you wonder about any of my choices for my estate or anything else, please know that I am free of any inappropriate influence of any sort, I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cI had an amazing life, I gave it everything I had. \u2026 Be useful and please know that I loved you all to the very end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his career, Adams turned his workplace cartoon <em>Dilbert<\/em> into a pop culture phenomenon and topped the <em>New York Times<\/em> bestseller list with his 1996 book <em>The Dilbert Principle<\/em>. However, Adams was also a controversial figure whose comic was dropped by newspapers in 2023 after suggesting white people \u201cget the f*** away\u201d from Black people.<\/p>\n<p>Keep scrolling for more information on Adams\u2019 life.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Was \u2018Dilbert\u2019 Creator Scott Adams?<\/h2>\n<p>After receiving a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1986, Scott Adams worked a series of corporate jobs. He started spoofing workplace culture with the comic strip Dilbert while working at Pacific Bell.<\/p>\n<p>The comic \u2014 which was first published in 1989 \u2014 parodied white-collar culture through the eyes of frazzled engineer Dilbert, his hapless corporate manager Pointy-Haired Boss and his pet Dogbert, who was constantly devising plots to take over the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDilbert\u2019s look is based on a real person, who doesn\u2019t know it. I worked with him but didn\u2019t know him well,\u201d Adams told <em>Publishers\u2019 Weekly<\/em> in 2008. \u201cHe just had an interesting potato-shaped body that was fun to draw. He started as a doodle at my day job at a bank. Dilbert\u2019s lack of social skills is modeled on my own personality; his professional skills are a composite of engineers I have known. At the height of Dilbert\u2019s popularity, the comic strip was read in approximately 2,000 newspapers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Dilbert was spun off into a series of products and projects of varying degrees of success, including video games, toys and an animated TV series that ran on UPN for two seasons between 1999 and 2000. (<em>Home Alone<\/em>\u2019s <strong>Daniel Stern<\/strong> voiced Dilbert in the TV show, while comedians <strong>Chris Elliott<\/strong> and <strong>Larry Miller<\/strong> played Dogbert and Pointy-Haired Boss, respectively.)<\/p>\n<p>In later years, he authored books on self-improvement and religious fantasy.<\/p>\n<h2>Was \u2018Dilbert\u2019 Creator Scott Adams Married?<\/h2>\n<p>Scott Adams married his first wife, Shelly Miles, on board a yacht in San Francisco Bay in July 2006. He became a stepfather to Shelly\u2019s two young children, Savannah and Justin, from a prior relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate to say stepdad because I hate the \u2018step\u2019 word. I\u2019m a bonus dad,\u201d he told the <em>East Bay Times<\/em> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Scott and Shelly divorced in 2014 on amicable terms. In October 2018, Scott announced that Shelly\u2019s son, Justin, had died at age 18 from a fentanyl overdose, per <em>The Mercury News<\/em>. (According to the Mayo Clinic, fentanyl is an \u201cinjection used to relieve severe pain during and after surgery,\u201d which should only be administered under care of a doctor.)<\/p>\n<p>The cartoonist explained to viewers on his webshow that \u201cthe little boy I raised from the age of 2\u201d had been trying to \u201cscore Xanax\u201d but was given a deadly cocktail of fentanyl instead. Scott recalled the horror of seeing \u201cmy dead, blue, bloated son taken out on a stretcher in front of his mother and biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just over a year later, Scott revealed on his podcast in December 2019 that he was engaged to <strong>Kristina Basham<\/strong>. They tied the knot July 11, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Dilbert<\/em> creator\u2019s second marriage was short-lived, as he confirmed on his podcast in March 2022 that he and Basham were getting divorced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am separated, slash going through a divorce,\u201d he told podcast listeners. \u201c[The] only reason I\u2019m telling you that is if you see my ex-wife on a date or me, don\u2019t worry about it. Because it\u2019s a process that\u2019s been going on for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why Was \u2018Dilbert\u2019 Creator Scott Adams Controversial?<\/h2>\n<p>Scott Adams made a series of provocative statements over the years and became known for his right-wing political views. He was accused of sexism for a since-deleted 2011 blog post where he wrote about the perceived differences between men and women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It\u2019s just easier this way for everyone,\u201d he claimed. \u201cYou don\u2019t argue with a 4-year old about why he shouldn\u2019t eat candy for dinner. You don\u2019t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don\u2019t argue when a woman tells you she\u2019s only making 80 cents to your dollar. It\u2019s the path of least resistance. Adams told NewsNation\u2019s <em>Cuomo<\/em> in March 2023 that he would not publicly apologize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did it intentionally,\u201d he said of his racial remarks. \u201cI offended people so that they\u2019d be drawn to the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Washington Post<\/em> reported around the same time that Adams lost nearly 80 percent of his income due to the racism scandal.<\/p>\n<h2>What Health Issues Did \u2018Dilbert\u2019 Creator Scott Adams Face?<\/h2>\n<p>Following former president <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong>\u2019s May 2025 announcement of his prostate cancer diagnosis, Scott Adams announced on his YouTube show that he had terminal prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the same cancer that Joe Biden has. I also have prostate cancer that has also spread to my bones,\u201d Adams told viewers. \u201cSo, my life expectancy is, maybe this summer. I expect to be checking out from this domain sometime this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams explained that the cancer was \u201calready intolerable\u201d and that he was \u201calways in pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you that I don\u2019t have good days. If you\u2019re wondering, \u2018Hey Scott, do you have any good days?\u2019 Nope. Every day is a nightmare and evening is even worse,\u201d he confessed.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, Adams publicly appealed to President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> to help him get on Pluvicto, a targeted radioligand therapy that can be effective in treating some forms of prostate cancer. Trump and Human Services Secretary <strong>Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/strong> both offered to help but Adams confirmed in December 2025 that he\u2019d yet to receive the drug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I will ever get the Pluvicto or not,\u201d he announced to viewers in December. \u201cIf I don\u2019t, I will be unhappy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams later told viewers that he was \u201cparalyzed below the waist\u201d in the final weeks of his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t move any muscles,\u201d he said in December 2025. \u201cI do have feeling, I just can\u2019t move any muscles.
