\n\tJoy Harmon, the actress who memorably and without a word stole a scene in the Paul Newman classic Cool Hand Luke<\/em>, has died. Deadline confirmed the news with a business associate. She was 87.<\/p>\n \n\tHarmon, then 27, played \u201cLucille\u201d in Cool Hand Luke<\/em>, and in her three-minute appearance, she outshines Newman, a young Dennis Hopper and even the film\u2019s eventual Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner George Kennedy. In it, she plays a young, unnamed woman who washes her car wearing only a tattered, tight fitting floral dress. Nearby is a chain gang of convicts digging a ditch in the hot, midday sun. Her character seems to enjoy their attention as she uses a very soapy sponge and, at times, her body to clean the car.<\/p>\n \n\tAt one point, Kennedy\u2019s character begins calling her \u201cLucille.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tNewman\u2019s Luke asks him, \u201cLucille. Where\u2019d you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tKennedy\u2019s character answers, \u201cAnything so innocent and built like that just gotta be named Lucille.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHer appearance in the film was so memorable that EW celebrated the actress\u2019 three minutes of screentime with a tribute on the film\u2019s 50th anniversary in 2017.<\/p>\n \n\tDEADLINE RELATED VIDEO:<\/strong><\/p>\n \n\tHarmon told EW that director Stewart Rosenberg\u2019s instructions were simple. <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cHe just worked it like\u2014\u2019Now, get the sponge, and squeeze it, and wash the car\u2019 and so forth. I just followed [his instruction]. The shots were all like kind of broken up, you know, how he wanted me to do it. It was easy. It was so easy.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tShe didn\u2019t fully understand the import of the scene.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI was just washing a car to my best ability and having fun with it, with the sponge and everything,\u201d she said. \u201cMy concept of the [scene] was not like what came out. I was not aware that there were two meanings to things that I was doing, and I\u2019m still not really that much aware of what they all were.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAudiences sure were.<\/p>\n \n\tHarmon began her screen career with appearance opposite Groucho Marx on You Bet Your Life<\/em> and Tell It to Groucho<\/em>. Throughout the \u201960s she worked on TV staples such as The Beverly Hillbillies<\/em>, Gidget<\/em>, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C<\/em>, Batman<\/em>, Bewitched<\/em> and The Monkees<\/em>.<\/p>\n \n\tHer big-screen career included an uncredited roles in The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit<\/em> and The Yum Yum Tree<\/em> (opposite Jack Lemmon), as well as more prominent parts in The Young Dillinger<\/em>, One Way Wahine<\/em>, Angel in my Pocket<\/em> and Village of the Giants<\/em>, in which she played a 30 foot-tall teen. <\/p>\n \n\t1967\u2019s Cool Hand Luke<\/em> turned out to be Harmon\u2019s penultimate film role. <\/p>\n \n\tLater in life, she launched Aunt Joy\u2019s Cakes out of the kitchen of her home, supplying cakes to her niece\u2019s coffee shop. According to the company\u2019s bio, Harmon soon started supplying desserts to the Disney lot. Eventually, she built Aunt Joy\u2019s into brick-and-mortar business located in Burbank.<\/p>\n \n\tHarmon was married for 30 years to producer and film editor Jeff Gourson before the couple divorced. She is suvived by her three children and nine grandchildren.<\/p>\n \n\tHer family has established a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical expenses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
