This winter, moviegoers will be faced with a choice not seen since July 21, 2023. While \u201cBarbenheimer\u201d ended up a win-win\u2014Barbie<\/em> was the highest-grossing movie of the year, and Oppenheimer<\/em> won the Best Picture Oscar\u2014it\u2019s not yet certain who will rise on December 18, 2026. Will Dune: Part Three<\/em>, the final entry in Denis Villeneuve\u2019s highly acclaimed sci-fi trilogy, reign supreme? Or will Avengers: Doomsday<\/em>, Marvel\u2019s bold-faced attempt to recapture its superhero movie magic, win the battle?<\/p>\n It\u2019s too early to tell, especially after both films showed exciting new teases at this week\u2019s CinemaCon. But one film has a distinct advantage going into that popcorn-laden weekend. Dune: Part Three<\/em> has the IMAX market locked down, meaning it will get to show off its sandy action on the most covetable giant screens.<\/p>\n Not one to be outdone, though, Disney would like fans to know that Doomsday<\/em> will still look and sound as fantastic as possible, thanks to its newly announced \u201cInfinity Vision.\u201d<\/p>\n According to a press release, Infinity Vision is no mere gimmick; it\u2019s \u201ca new certification for premium large format (PLF) theaters.\u201d If a theater is certified, it means audiences can expect \u201cthe biggest, brightest, and most immersive cinematic experiences\u201d based on \u201crigorous technical standards\u201d for screen size, image clarity, and sound.<\/p>\n While that sounds encouraging, it also seems like there\u2019s some FOMO going on here. Infinity Vision-certified theaters are really just regular theaters that can brag they feature tip-top equipment. It\u2019s not the same seeing a movie in the massive, eardrum-shattering IMAX format.<\/p>\n However, you have to guess Disney wanted to make sure Marvel fans\u2014who, let\u2019s face it, have a lot of crossover with Dune<\/em> fans\u2014didn\u2019t feel left behind. Maybe the studio hopes it\u2019ll encourage people who might have waited on seeing Doomsday<\/em> to go opening weekend anyway. There is spoiler avoidance to consider, after all!<\/p>\n The press release notes that Infinity Vision will include \u201cover 75 domestic and 300 global exhibitor PLFs.\u201d You can first experience it during September\u2019s re-release of Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, and then, of course, in December when Doomsday<\/em> arrives.<\/p>\n Want more io9 news?
