But he\u2019s treating Joe Rogan very differently"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The way Joe Rogan tells it, about all President Donald Trump needed before he fast-tracked research into therapeutic uses for certain psychedelic treatments like Ibogaine was a text from the podcaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe text message came back, \u2018Sounds great! Do you want FDA approval? Let\u2019s do it!\u2019\u201d Rogan said while standing directly behind Trump at an Oval Office signing ceremony on Saturday. \u201cIt was literally that quick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The anecdote was seemingly meant to show how anxious Trump is to help people. But it also reflected an increasingly fascinating power dynamic between Trump and Rogan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rogan\u2019s surprise visit happened to come after he has made a number of high-profile comments critical of Trump\u2019s handling of the Iran war to Rogan\u2019s massive podcast audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And while Trump has savaged other allies who offered similar criticisms \u2013 people like Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Alex Jones \u2013 he\u2019s taking a very different tack with Rogan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s a much more solicitous one. While others get the vinegar, Rogan is for some reason getting the sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rogan\u2019s commentary on the Iran war has been routinely brutal for Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Last month, he called the war \u201cinsane based on what he ran on\u201d \u2013 specifically, ending wars \u2013 and said the war was \u201cwhy a lot of people feel betrayed\u201d by Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI can\u2019t believe we went to this war,\u201d he said on another podcast with Theo Von earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And just this Thursday, Rogan called the war \u201cf**king terrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMost people that voted for Trump or wanted Trump to be in office, one of the things that was attractive was this: No more wars,\u201d Rogan said. \u201cNow we\u2019re in one of the craziest ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The same day Rogan made those comments, news broke that Trump would sign off on one of Rogan\u2019s big initiatives. (Though it bears emphasizing it\u2019s hardly just Rogan pushing this; it\u2019s also former Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.) And that would make sense, given there\u2019s a bevy of polling suggesting he <em>should<\/em> fear such a thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While self-described MAGA supporters say they approve of the war, as many as 1 in 5 or even 1 in 4 of Trump\u2019s 2024 voters do not, and many of the rest are only lukewarm on it. A significant chunk of Trump\u2019s voters seem to have at least some buyer\u2019s remorse right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Perhaps it\u2019s starting to register for Trump that this is a problem as the midterm elections loom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But a non-mutually exclusive explanation is that he just sees something different in Rogan than he does in the likes of Kelly and Carlson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After all, he\u2019s regularly treated Rogan with kid gloves even after other major criticisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump also fondly recalled his 2024 Rogan interview while speaking with podcaster Logan Paul last month, just a day after Rogan\u2019s first big, harsh Iran war criticisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And when NBC News in early February asked Trump directly about Rogan\u2019s criticisms of Trump\u2019s deportation efforts, Trump opted to try and smooth things over rather than lash out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI think he\u2019s a great guy, and I think he likes me, too,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump then added: \u201cAnd, you know, liking me isn\u2019t important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s a laughable comment. Trump has regularly acknowledged how much his view of people hinges on whether they like him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But when it comes to taking the next step and offering him loyalty, he tends to demand it more from people he thinks <em>should be<\/em> loyal to him. And in that way, Rogan might be different from others like Kelly and Carlson, who are much more steeped in the conservative movement. Rogan comes from a much more of an apolitical world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Saturday in the Oval Office, Trump referred to Rogan as \u201ca little bit more liberal than I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s also for that reason that Rogan\u2019s criticisms present a particularly problematic development for Trump. His audience is more apolitical than the likes of Kelly and Carlson.
