KYIV, April 19 (Reuters) – Eight people, including one child, remain hospitalised in Kyiv after being wounded in a shooting that \u200ckilled six people, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A Russian-born man \u200copened fire from an automatic rifle on passersby on Saturday before barricading himself in a supermarket \u200bwith hostages, where he was shot dead by police.<\/p>\n
Police stormed the supermarket after unsuccessfully trying to negotiate with the suspect for 40 minutes.<\/p>\n
Klitschko said the wounded child, whose parents were killed in the shooting, was in moderate condition, while one \u200cof the adults was \u2060in critical condition.<\/p>\n
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday that the shooting, which happened in the capital’s leafy Holosiivskyi district, injured \u206014 people.<\/p>\n
“They are all receiving all necessary medical care,” the mayor said on Telegram.<\/p>\n
The supermarket has been cordoned off and remains closed. Bullet holes are visible in \u200bwindows of \u200bthe supermarket, and blood stains can still \u200bbe seen on the pavement \u200cand asphalt.<\/p>\n
Flowers were left near a residential building a couple of hundred metres from the supermarket, where the shooter shot his first victims.<\/p>\n
“I saw how people grabbed children from the playground and ran away. They screamed: ‘run away, hide.’ People didn’t understand what was going on. They said that there was a \u200cman there, a man was shooting with a \u200bmachine gun,” Daryna, a 31-year-old local resident, \u200btold Reuters.<\/p>\n
Another local resident, 73-year-old \u200bpensioner, told Reuters that the man he saw shooting bystanders \u200con Saturday “looked kind of smart.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t want \u200bto clear him \u200bof blame or anything like that… but he didn’t look like a killer.”<\/p>\n
Shootings of this nature are extremely rare in Ukraine and the country’s \u200bsecurity service said the incident \u200cwas being investigated as a terrorist act.<\/p>\n
Police have not yet identified \u200ba motive for the crime.<\/p>\n
