\n\tIt was announced during Disney\u2019s presentation at Cinemacon that Joe and Anthony Russo\u2019s theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame <\/em>will feature previously unreleased footage, but there was no signal of what that footage might entail.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tSaturday night at the Sands Film Festival in St Andrews, Scotland, however, Joe Russo revealed, during a session with Deadline\u2019s Mike Fleming and Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at the Russos\u2019 AGBO, exactly what audiences can expect to see on the big screen on Sept. 25 when\u00a0Endgame<\/em> is re-released.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt\u2019s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we\u2019ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday<\/em> story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame<\/em>,\u201d Joe Russo told a packed crowd in St Andrews. The veteran filmmaker was speaking via Zoom link after being held up in the States following the Cinemacon presentation in Las Vegas.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame<\/em> to Doomsday<\/em> in a very unique way, and because the movie was so successful, we have an opportunity to re-release it. You don\u2019t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money, so the fact that we can enhance the story of Doomsday<\/em> by bridging it to Endgame<\/em> and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story: It\u2019s a really unique opportunity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tJoe continued to describe the upcoming Endgame <\/em>re-release as a \u201ccritical companion story\u201d and a \u201csetup for what you\u2019re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers Doomsday<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tEndgame<\/em> has grossed over $2.799 billion and wrapped up phase three of the Marvel Universe. The film focused on Josh Brolin\u2019s Thanos wreaking havoc across the universe, and the fight to stop him. Some character storylines ended in Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, including that of Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s Tony Stark\/Iron Man. In a multiverse twist, Downey Jr. will return as the villain Dr. Doom in Doomsday.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \n\tJoe said the decision for Downey Jr. to return as Dr. Doom was the result of \u201ca long conversation between Marvel, Kevin Feige, and Robert.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cDowney started contemplating his return about 2 years ago, maybe 2.5 years ago,\u201d Joe said.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI was at dinner with him in New York, and he had mentioned to me that he was thinking about this, and the concept was for him to play the ultimate villain. He played the ultimate hero, and now he\u2019s going to play the ultimate villain. I thought it was a very clever idea.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tJoe added that it wasn\u2019t until he and Anthony connected once again with longtime Marvel screenwriter Stephen McFeely that they locked a story structure that allowed for Downey Jr. to return as Dr. Doom.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tJoe said the upcoming Avengers<\/em> films will unfold in a similar structure to the \u201ccomics from which they\u2019re inspired.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cSerialized storytelling is the goal here,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the fun, that\u2019s the mission, alongside making movies that bring people together. I\u2019d argue there are very few movie companies in history that have brought people together the way that Marvel movies have, fostering a sense of community in a theater.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHe added: \u201cThe ultimate reward is fostering community at a time where community is in short supply.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAvengers: Endgame <\/em>is the second-highest-grossing MPA film of all time internationally with $1.94B (behind only Avatar<\/em>\u2018s $2.138 billion). Avatar <\/em>remains the highest-grossing movie of all-time with $2.924 billion.
