Not usable in court, but potentially entertaining.<span class=\"image-caption-credit\"> (Image Credit: Vanity Fair\/YouTube)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At its core, <em>Gundam <\/em>is about war \u2014 and its horrors, its effect upon populations and young people, and the depravity of those who commit atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>On a more superficial level, it\u2019s about teens and young adults piloting mobile suits \u2014 massive spacefaring \u201crobots\u201d capable of fighting with guns, laser swords, \u201cfunnels\u201d (long story), and other weapons, on space and on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The titular gundams tend to represent the pinnacle of mobile suit design. In some <em>Gundam <\/em>properties, highly evolved pilots are able to connect with their machines \u2014 and even with each other\u2019s minds. Rarely, even from beyond the grave.<\/p>\n<p>(Yes, it\u2019s a little like The Force in <em>Star Wars<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>The first <em>Gundam <\/em>anime premiered in 1979. It\u2019s absolutely worth watching, even if you have to brace yourself for some oddities that are, at least in part, a product of its time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to FINALLY Get Into GUNDAM\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ixcLdRUjx8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-is-where-the-controversial-scenes-come-into-play\">This is where the \u2018controversial\u2019 scenes come into play<\/h2>\n<p>Launching in the 1970s meant that characters are sometimes portrayed doing things that are appalling \u2014 like striking each other \u2014 that were at the time meant to be dramatic, or to portray the tensions of war.<\/p>\n<p>There are also controversial nude scenes. Even among people who generally <em>like <\/em>nudity in their media.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not referring to when \u201cNewtype\u201d (one of several labels throughout the adaptations) pilots communicate with each other, appearing as a nude silhouette in space even in the heat of battle. <\/p>\n<p>There are scenes of women and girls showering, often accompanied by children \u2014 which, at the time, was likely intended to make the scenes <em>less<\/em> voyeuristic. In a modern lens, the animation is more uncomfortable this way.<\/p>\n<p>Even as the decades continued, adaptations like <em>Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team<\/em> featured moments of animated nudity that felt like fan service. We\u2019d love to be pleasantly surprised. <\/p>\n<p>But we won\u2019t hold our breath.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Story of Char Aznable in 16min (Gundam ASAP)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ay2E6wBaPVo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While we\u2019re wishing for things in <em>Gundam<\/em>, something more important to hope to see is Sweeney playing, not a protagonist or a love interest, but Char Aznable or an analogue.<\/p>\n<p>Char (and his various masked analogues in different iterations of <em>Gundam<\/em>) is a foil character to the lead pilot \u2014 usually, anyway. <\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a war hero for the baddies, with a lot of skill and with more experience than the hapless teen who just fell into (or stole) a sophisticated mobile suit.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney would be amazing in the role.<\/p>\n<p>We could picture her in a uniform and a conspicuous mask, piloting the Red Comet. Or the Tallgeese.
