Charlie Sheen<\/strong>\u2018s father, Martin Sheen<\/strong>, intentionally chose not to participate in his son\u2019s tell-all doc to not be \u201ccomplicit\u201d if it didn\u2019t go well.<\/p>\n

During a panel event for Netflix\u2019s aka Charlie Sheen<\/em> on Wednesday, April 22, director Andrew Renzi<\/strong> addressed Martin\u2019s absence from the project, saying, \u201cThere was another thing that Martin said specifically that I will always really respect, just him being a father. He said, \u2018If this goes sideways, if you do him dirty\u2019 \u2014 basically without saying that because Martin Sheen would never talk about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renzi clarified that Martin, 85, wanted to prioritize supporting Charlie, 60.<\/p>\n

\u201c[He said], \u2018If this goes sideways, I need to be able to stand beside my son because I always have. And if I\u2019m in this thing, I can\u2019t, because I will have been complicit in this thing that you created,’\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCharlie Sheen\u2019s Netflix documentary included brutally honest revelations from his famous ex-wives Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller. Aka Charlie Sheen, which premiered on Wednesday, September 10, featured separate interviews with Richards, 54, and Mueller, 48, where they addressed the highs and lows of being with Sheen, 60. Richards and Sheen\u2019s youngest daughter, Lola, 20, and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Renzi and Charlie acknowledged how some of his family, including brother Emilio Estevez<\/strong>, decided not to appear out of respect. Renzi recalled Estevez, 63, taking a step back because he \u201cwanted Charlie to have the project.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe felt they were my stories to tell,\u201d Charlie added before Renzi defended the family\u2019s decision, saying, \u201cIf I\u2019m putting myself in their shoes without them saying this directly to me, this is their life that they\u2019ve lived for a long time, and there was probably going to be a whole bunch of crap that they just didn\u2019t want to have to sit there and have to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite not being featured, Charlie got to hear feedback from his dad.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Martin] saw it and loved it and was just, he was laughing, he was crying, he was so engaged and he comes up to me afterward and says, \u2018I\u2019m already in it. I\u2019d much rather be young, handsome in this thing than this guy right now. You don\u2019t need this old guy in your movie,’\u201d Charlie recalled about the first time his family came together to watch a cut of the film. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Well, beg to differ.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The first part of the Netflix documentary, which premiered in September 2025, featured a message that read, \u201cMartin Sheen and Emilio Est\u00e9vez declined to participate.\u201d In the doc, Charlie was asked about their decision to opt out.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmilio and Dad, they fully support me. They\u2019re rooting for me in ways you can\u2019t even imagine. But I can\u2019t expect people to revisit all the drug abuse and all the s***ty choices that hurt the people I love,\u201d he explained. \u201cWould I love them both in this? Absolutely. But I completely understand why they chose not to.\u201d<\/p>\n
