{"id":84087,"date":"2026-04-25T10:12:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diyhaven858.wasmer.app\/index.php\/benficas-prestianni-gets-6-match-ban-for-anti-gay-conduct-towards-vinicius-jr\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T10:12:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:12:46","slug":"benficas-prestianni-gets-6-match-ban-for-anti-gay-conduct-towards-vinicius-jr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diyhaven858.wasmer.app\/index.php\/benficas-prestianni-gets-6-match-ban-for-anti-gay-conduct-towards-vinicius-jr\/","title":{"rendered":"Benfica&#8217;s Prestianni gets 6-match ban for anti-gay conduct towards Vin\u00edcius Jr."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-meta\"><span class=\"timestamp \">Apr 24, 2026, 08:51 AM ET<\/span><\/div>\n<p>UEFA on Friday handed Benfica&#8217;s Gianluca Prestianni a six-match ban for anti-gay conduct toward Real Madrid&#8217;s Vin\u00edcius J\u00fanior during their Champions League match in February, with three of those matches suspended for a two-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The ban also includes the one match Prestianni served as a provisional suspension in February, so unless he triggers the suspended three-match ban, he will actually be sidelined for only two further games.<\/p>\n<p>Vin\u00edcius accused Prestianni of racially abusing him during their playoff first leg, leading the match to be paused for 10 minutes in the second half.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Vin\u00edcius scored to put Madrid ahead in the 50th minute in Lisbon &#8212; the only goal in a 1-0 win &#8212; and was then confronted by Prestianni after celebrating by the corner flag.<\/p>\n<p>Prestianni could be seen speaking to Vin\u00edcius while covering his mouth with his jersey, before the Brazil international pointed to him and ran toward the referee.<\/p>\n<p>Vin\u00edcius spoke to referee Francois Letexier, who made the &#8220;arms-crossed&#8221; gesture indicating that an accusation of racist abuse had been made.<\/p>\n<p>However, sources told ESPN&#8217;s Bruno Andrade that the Argentinian, 20, gave evidence stating that he called Vin\u00edcius the anti-gay slur &#8220;m&#8212;&#8212;&#8221; in Spanish, rather than &#8220;mono,&#8221; which is Spanish for monkey.<\/p>\n<p>Article 14 of UEFA&#8217;s disciplinary regulations states that the punishment framework for both racist and anti-gay abuse is the same.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any entity or person subject to these regulations who insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, incurs a suspension lasting at least ten matches or a specified period of time, or any other appropriate sanction,&#8221; the regulations say.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA appointed an ethics and disciplinary investigator after the match, and the probe concluded Friday that Prestianni&#8217;s conduct was anti-gay rather than racist.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA said it had requested that FIFA extend the ban worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA last month fined Benfica for racist abuse by fans at the same match.<\/p>\n<p>Benfica acknowledged the ban in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sport Lisboa e Benfica announces that it has been notified by UEFA of the sanction imposed on the player Prestianni for using anti-gay language during the Benfica v Real Madrid match,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The player Prestianni has been handed a six-match ban, three of which are suspended for two years.
