\n\tSpies are back, at least according to rising star Agnes O\u2019Casey, who is playing four agent roles this year and who unsurprisingly has some thoughts about the most famous spook of all.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was playing a game of \u2018Would you rather be?\u2019 with friends recently and the question was \u2018Bond or Indiana\u2019, and after that question I just became obsessed with the idea of playing Bond,\u201d O\u2019Casey told Deadline. \u201cI\u2019d love to be a female Bond and for her to shapeshift in the way he does, to have \u2018Bond girls\u2019 be \u2018Bond guys\u2019. Now in my head it\u2019s like the most fun thing ever. I want to speed around in an Aston Martin.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tO\u2019Casey certainly has the chops. Her spook roles this year include Liz Gold in the West End adaptation of John le Carr\u00e9\u2019s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold<\/em>, which she will reprise in the BBC-MGM+\u2019s Legacy of Spies<\/em>, along with a return to Netflix\u2019s Black Doves <\/em>and, finally, Apple TV\u2019s Star City. <\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tShe is at Canneseries this weekend promoting the latter, a spinoff of For All Mankind <\/em>starring Rhys Ifans and Anna Maxwell Martin about the Soviet Union and the space race. O\u2019Casey plays Irina Morozova, a recent addition to the surveillance department who is taken under the wing of the head of the department (Maxwell Martin). An older version of her was played by Svetlana Efremova\u00a0in For All Mankind<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I received the breakdown of my character I just felt like this was in my wheelhouse,\u201d said O\u2019Casey, who broke out playing yet another undercover role in the BBC\u2019s Ridley Road<\/em>. \u201cIrina is an amazing character because at first she felt like a baddie and I needed to find a way to justify her but I slowly started to think about her as more nuanced. She\u2019s a fish out of water but is also thrilled by that, so there was a lot to play with.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tUnsurprisingly given her current spy penchant, O\u2019Casey researched the role deeply, reading Svetlana Alexievich\u2019s oral history Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets<\/em>, and Ben Macintyre\u2019s The Spy and The Traitor, <\/em>which she says became something of a \u201cbible\u201d to the Star City <\/em>cast.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor All Mankind <\/em>is expanding the franchise after quietly becoming one of Apple TV\u2019s longest-running series of all time, and O\u2019Casey said she has been amazed at the \u201cdifferent spectrum of people in my life\u201d who count themselves huge fans.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe is now preparing to shoot Legacy of Spies<\/em> with all-star cast including Matthew Macfadyen, Daniel Br\u00fchl and Dan Stevens. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI found my feet with this play as a theater actress,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I\u2019m really excited to film something where I feel like I have a strong grip. I\u2019m not scrabbling around for who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo what is it about being undercover that attracts O\u2019Casey? <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s something about a double life that is appealing,\u201d she explained. \u201cAt school I was well behaved but secretly felt like I was badly behaved. We all somewhat feel like we are living a double life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStar City <\/em>has its world premiere Sunday at Canneseries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
