President Donald Trump<\/strong> and first lady Melania Trump<\/strong> were rushed off stage at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner in Washington D.C. after shots reportedly broke out.<\/p>\n

CNN reported that Donald, 79, Melania, 56, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavit<\/strong>t were \u201csafe\u201d after they were evacuated for security reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cA suspect is in custody,\u201d a Secret Service spokesperson told CNN.<\/p>\n

A Secret Service spokesperson told the media that the shooting occurred near the \u201cmain magnetometer\u201d at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. Per the Secret Service, the condition of the suspect is \u201cunknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump broke his silence via Truth Social, writing, \u201cQuite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we \u2018LET THE SHOW GO ON\u2019 but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we\u2019ll just, plain, have to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The network reported that Trump was rushed to \u201ca safe location\u201d but wanted to return to deliver remarks at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/strong> was also moved to a safe location during the fracas, according to the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association pool.<\/p>\n

Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk<\/strong> was in attendance at the event as well and was reportedly seen crying after shots broke out, via CNN. (Erika\u2019s husband, conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/strong>, was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. He was 31 years old.)<\/p>\n

Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin<\/strong> told reporters that he was tackled to the ground for his safety by Secret Service agents.<\/p>\n

CNN anchor Wolf Blitz<\/strong> \u2014 who was present at the event \u2014 revealed on air that \u201cvery loud, very scary\u201d gunshots were heard outside the main ballroom where the annual event took place.<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently they got the gunman \u2026 It was very, very scary,\u201d Blitzer, 78, shared on air via phone. \u201cIt was just a terrible, scary, frightening moment for me. \u2026 The incident looks like it\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blitzer added that he witnessed the shooter \u201con the ground\u201d after being tackled by police. \u201cI could be wrong,\u201d he said later of whether or not the shooter was shot. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of law enforcement here dealing with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several minutes after the security incident, a spokesperson returned to the podium to announce that the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner will continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe program is going to resume shortly,\u201d journalist and White House Correspondents\u2019 President Weijia Jiang<\/strong> told those in the room. \u201cWe will have more details to share momentarily, but for now, please be patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the Friday, September 12, episode of \u201cThe Charlie Kirk Show\u201d podcast, which is cohosted by Jack Posobiec, James O\u2019Keefe and Kash Patel, an empty chair was shown as a way to honor Kirk. \u201cCharlie would\u2019ve wanted us to be here,\u201d said one [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Later, Jiang returned to the podium to announce, \u201cLaw enforcement has requested that we leave the premises. \u2026 [The president] wanted to emphasize that nobody was hurt. The cabinet and the first lady, everybody\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said earlier tonight that journalism is a public service because when there is an emergency we run toward the crisis, not away from it \u2026 I saw all of you reporting and that\u2019s what we do,\u201d Jiang went on. \u201cThank God everybody is safe and thank you for coming together tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
