President Donald Trump<\/strong> has said he is \u201chonored\u201d to be a target following the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at our great presidents, [this] doesn\u2019t happen to people who don\u2019t do anything,\u201d Trump, 79, told reporters at the White House on Saturday, April 25.<\/p>\n

Multiple media outlets reported that a 30-year-old man from California was \u201capprehended\u201d during the shooting. The Secret Service told the media that the suspect\u2019s condition is \u201cunknown,\u201d as are his motives. (He has been charged with two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man has been captured and they\u2019re going to his apartment. I guess he lives in California and he\u2019s a very sick person, a very sick person,\u201d Trump said during his news conference.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPresident Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are both safe following a shooting at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner in Washington D.C.. The president, the first lady, pregnant White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and other officials were rushed out of the ballroom at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington D.C. when gunfire erupted [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Trump also addressed the moment-by-moment process of being rushed from the ballroom to a secure location at the Washington Hilton once shots were fired.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was totally shocked when something like this happens,\u201d he said. \u201cIt happened to me a little bit, and that never changes. The fact, we were sitting right next to each other, first lady [Melania Trump<\/strong>] on my right, and I heard a noise \u2026 I thought it was a tray going down and it was a pretty loud noise and it was from quite far away. [The suspect] hadn\u2019t reached the area at all. He really got him \u2026 but it was a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president went on, \u201cSome people really understood that very quickly, other people didn\u2019t \u2026 I was watching what happened. Melania was very cognizant of what happened, I think she knew immediately what happened. She was saying, \u2018That\u2019s a bad noise.\u2019 And we were whisked away. It was very quick .. it was a matter of seconds that we were out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald, first lady Melania and various members of the cabinet were evacuated from the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday amid the emergency. A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed that the incident occurred at the \u201cmain magnetometer\u201d at the Washington Hilton. No one in the Trump administration or among the press assembled was harmed during the incident.<\/p>\n

A Secret Service agent was shot but Trump said he\u2019d been \u201csaved\u201d due to his protective gear. The agent was taken to the hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vest did its job. I just spoke to the officer and he\u2019s doing great,\u201d Trump announced at Saturday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the evening, Donald confirmed via Truth Social that he, Melania and other cabinet members \u2014 including pregnant White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt<\/strong>\u2014 were all safe after being evacuated. The president suggested initially that he wanted the evening to continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we \u2018LET THE SHOW GO ON\u2019 but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we\u2019ll just, plain, have to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the shooting, journalist and White House Correspondents\u2019 President Weijia Jiang<\/strong> told those in attendance that the event would not continue. Instead, it would be rescheduled sometime in the next 30 days at the alleged behest of the president.<\/p>\n
