President Donald Trump<\/strong> praised first lady Melania Trump<\/strong>\u2019s reaction to a shooting at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank the first lady, that was a rather traumatic experience for her,\u201d Trump, 79, told reporters from the White House on Saturday, April 25. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to let anybody take over our society, we\u2019re not going to cancel things out \u2026 we can\u2019t do that. We wanted to stay tonight, I fought like hell to say, but it was protocol \u2026 there was a lot of action going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald, Melania, 56, and pregnant White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt<\/strong> were among the Trump administration officials evacuated from the ballroom of the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. when gunfire was exchanged.<\/p>\n

While speaking to reporters on Saturday night, Trump reflected on how he and Melania both reacted to the sound of gunfire ringing out.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tErika Kirk was in attendance as shots broke out at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner. CNN reported that Kirk, 37, was seen crying as the chaos unfolded at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C. on Saturday, April 25. CNN\u2019s Sara Sidner said on air that she personally witnessed Kirk leaving the main ballroom, telling aides, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was totally shocking when something like this happens. It happened to me a little bit, and that never changes,\u201d the president said. \u201cThe fact, we were sitting right next to each other, first lady on my right, and I heard a noise \u2026 I thought it was a tray going down and it was a pretty loud noise and it was from quite far away. [The suspect] hadn\u2019t reached the area at all. They really got him \u2026 but it was a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump went on, \u201cSome people really understood that very quickly, other people didn\u2019t \u2026 I was watching what happened. Melania was very cognizant of what happened. I think she knew immediately what happened. She was saying, \u2018That\u2019s a bad noise.\u2019 And we were whisked away. It was very quick \u2026 it was a matter of seconds that we were out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Per multiple media outlets, a 30-year-old man from California was \u201capprehended\u201d during the shooting and has been charged with two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. (Per the Secret Service, the suspect\u2019s current condition and motives are unknown. He was reportedly a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner was being held.)<\/p>\n

A Secret Service agent was shot during the violent exchange and has been hospitalized. Trump confirmed to reporters during his news conference that he\u2019d spoken to the injured agent by phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe [bulletproof] vest did its job. I just spoke to the officer and he\u2019s doing great,\u201d the politician revealed.<\/p>\n

Later in the news conference, Trump said he was \u201chonored\u201d to be a target because it means his presidency has been consequential.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at our great presidents, [this] doesn\u2019t happen to people who don\u2019t do anything,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n

Trump initially wanted to return to the Washington Hilton to deliver his planned speech. However, White House Correspondents\u2019 Association President Weijia Jiang<\/strong> ultimately confirmed that the dinner would be rescheduled sometime in the next 30 days at the alleged behest of the president.<\/p>\n
