Dancing With the Stars<\/em> Val Chmerkovskiy<\/strong> is opening up about who he does \u2014 and doesn\u2019t \u2014 want to see compete on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cLess politicians,\u201d Chmerkovskiy exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on Saturday, April 25, while attending Jennie Garth<\/strong> and iHeartPodcast\u2019s \u201cI Choose Me\u201d live summit at the iHeartRadio Theatre in Burbank, California.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things I admire about our show, I love being a part of the fact that in a world quite literally designed to split us all apart and create agony amongst people, we\u2019re a show that creates union and brings people together,\u201d the professional dancer continued. \u201cYes, it\u2019s just a dance show, but it\u2019s way more than just a dance show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chmerkovskiy added, \u201cDance is just a vehicle to bring people together \u2014 of all ages, all political sides. No one knows who\u2019s voting for who, and we\u2019re all just enjoying ourselves and enjoying two hours a week of just good family fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dancing With the Stars<\/em> has invited plenty of controversial political figures to compete over the years, including former Texas Governor Rick Perry<\/strong>, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson<\/strong> and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy reaction was like, \u2018Yo, Sean Spicer\u2019s on the cast!\u2019 That was my reaction calling my brother,\u201d Chmerkovskiy told People<\/em> in September 2019 after the former Trump administration official was cast in Season 28 of the reality competition show.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then in the same breath, it\u2019s like, and so is Ray Lewis<\/strong> and so is Lamar Odom<\/strong> and so is Christie Brinkley<\/strong> and so is Hannah [Brown]<\/strong>,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe thing that makes our show unique and wild and crazy and entertaining is the fact that it\u2019s a collective of all these different people. And you don\u2019t have to agree or follow all these people.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added at the time, \u201cThey\u2019re all very different. And the beauty, me being a dance ambassador, is \u2014 what I find a lot of pride in is how inclusive dance is and that it doesn\u2019t judge based on any of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n
