In a rare interview, the actress looked back on one famous part she turned down \u2014 Annie Paradis in 1996\u2019s <em>First Wives Club<\/em> \u2014 and explained why another, <em>Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em>, still resonates with families more than 30 years later.<\/p>\n<p>Field didn\u2019t mince words about her decision to pass on <em>First Wives Club<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved all those actors,\u201d Field told <em>Parade<\/em> in an interview published April 25. \u201cBut I did turn it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-role-she-couldnt-do\">Sally Field Says \u2018First Wives Club\u2019 Was a Role She Just Couldn\u2019t Do<\/h2>\n<p>The reason was philosophical. Sally Field has tackled a variety of roles throughout her career, from boy-crazy surfers to educated First Ladies. \u201cShe dared this town to typecast her, and then simply broke through every dogmatic barrier to find her own way \u2014 not to stardom, which I imagine she\u2019d decry, but to great roles [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>First Wives Club<\/em>, based on the 1992 novel, follows three college friends who reunite at the funeral of a fourth friend who died by suicide after being abandoned by her husband for a younger woman. All three discover they share the same experience \u2014 each has been divorced by a husband who left for a younger partner. Rather than staying hurt, they form a pact and set out to get even. Their plan isn\u2019t just petty revenge \u2014 it\u2019s about exposing their exes\u2019 hypocrisy, reclaiming their self-worth and rediscovering independence. Along the way, they use clever schemes to undermine their exes socially and financially.<\/p>\n<p>As the plot unfolds, the women realize revenge alone isn\u2019t enough. They shift toward empowerment and solidarity, ultimately using their resources to support other women in similar situations. The film scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.<\/p>\n<p>Field held no regrets about the casting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would never have been as good. I mean, it was absolutely right for Keaton \u2014 not for me,\u201d Field remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Keaton died on October 11, 2025, at age 79 from primary bacterial pneumonia.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-mrs-doubtfire-still-hits-home\">Why \u2018Mrs. Doubtfire\u2019 Still Hits Home for Fans of Sally Field<\/h2>\n<p>Though Field passed on <em>First Wives Club<\/em>, her r\u00e9sum\u00e9\u2028speaks for itself \u2014 from early roles in<em> Gidget<\/em> and <em>The Flying Nun<\/em> to <em>Norma Rae<\/em>, <em>Steel Magnolias,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump <\/em>and more, she\u2019s had a lifetime full of big hits. It\u2019s 1993\u2019s <em>Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em> that Field believes still carries a quietly powerful message.<\/p>\n<p>The family comedy-drama stars the late <strong>Robin Williams<\/strong> as Daniel Hillard, a divorced father who can\u2019t stand being separated from his kids. After losing custody, he comes up with a wild plan \u2014 disguising himself as an elderly British nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire to get hired in his ex-wife\u2019s home and secretly spend time with his children. As the double life grows more complicated, Daniel struggles to keep his identity hidden while learning hard truths about responsibility, parenting and why his marriage fell apart. Field plays his ex-wife, who grows more independent, adding tension until Daniel can no longer hide who he really is.<\/p>\n<p>Also starring <strong>Pierce Brosnan<\/strong>, <strong>Harvey Fierstein<\/strong>, <strong>Lisa Jakub<\/strong>, <strong>Matthew Lawrence<\/strong> and <strong>Mara Wilson<\/strong>, the film has endured as a family favorite. Field isn\u2019t surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe movie is about something really valid and important,\u201d she told <em>Parade<\/em> in a story published April 26. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of laughter, but it\u2019s about the difficulties of divorce for children and how ultimately, the mom and the dad can get divorced and the kids will still be OK.
