Such was the case in this week\u2019s <em>Starfleet Academy<\/em>, which gave us Calica, so let\u2019s induct it into the <em>Star Trek<\/em> sporting halls of fame alongside the franchise\u2019s other fictitious athletic achievements.<\/p>\n<h2>Calica<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s get the newbie out of the way first. A mascot-defense shootout designed to encourage our young academy heroes to learn how to handle a phaser, Calica is at least not a Starfleet-specific sport, as multiple cadets mention having previously played in leagues on their homeworlds. Played with modified phasers that can transport a targeted opponent to the sidelines to eliminate them, Calica\u2019s round-based matches see opposing teams attempt to breach each other\u2019s defensive lines to score points by shooting a target defended by a costume-wearing mascot.<\/p>\n<h2>Geskana<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2000713527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2000713527\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000713527\" src=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana.jpg\" alt=\"Star Trek Geskana\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-336x224.jpg 336w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-1280x853.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-672x448.jpg 672w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-960x640.jpg 960w, https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/star-trek-geskana-1600x1067.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, (max-width: 1023px) calc(100vw - 2rem), (max-width: 1258px) calc((100vw - 3.68rem) * 2 \/ 3), 800px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2000713527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Paramount<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Briefly played by Archer and Tucker in the\u00a0<em>Enterprise<\/em> episode \u201cDesert Crossing,\u201d Geskana was a sport played by members of Zobral\u2019s clan, an unidentified species that basically invented lacrosse with smaller goals and more opportunities for our heroes to take their shirts off.<\/p>\n<h2>Vajhaq<\/h2>\n<p><em>Star Trek<\/em> has a bunch of one-off sports that are mentioned in passing once and then never again\u2014a familiar bit of worldbuilding shorthand. The brusquely named Vajhaq is one of several noted in\u00a0<em>Deep Space Nine<\/em>, a ball-based game played on the planet Meridian. Sisko declined the opportunity to play a match. Almost quite literally just professional wrestling but <em>Star Trek<\/em>\u2014right down to the appearance of Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson in the finest of his acting endeavors\u2014Tsunkatse was a combat sport where fighters wore stun disruptors on their hands and feet and played in an arena surrounded by similarly charged panels. While primarily played with just the hands (one gloved, one ungloved, with only shots from the gloved hand capable of scoring points), Major Kira was mentioned as owning a springball racquet multiple times on <em>DS9<\/em>, so there may have been a variant of the sport that used one\u2026 or the writers confused Kira\u2019s sport of choice with Miles and Bashir\u2019s fondness for racquetball. It\u2019s only ever shown being played on holodecks, so it\u2019s unknown if it\u2019s a purely holographical sport or could be played with a real disc and phasers.<\/p>\n<h2>Karo-Net<\/h2>\n<p>We know absolutely nothing about Karo-Net other than that it exists\u2014it\u2019s mentioned once offhandedly by Odo while he bemoans to Quark the compromises made in relationships. A one-on-one duel played in a small circular arena, Anbo players wore light armor that included a full visor to obscure their vision, battling with a staff that included a proximity sensor in one of its ends to help provide an auditory clue of where their opponent was.<\/p>\n<h2>The Octran Fertility Contest<\/h2>\n<p>Another offhanded mention from\u00a0<em>Enterprise<\/em>, this contest was played in a similar manner to basketball, according to Phlox. Hoverball was apparently incredibly popular though, especially on <em>Voyager<\/em>, with a good chunk of the senior staff playing it among themselves on the holodeck in their downtime.<\/p>\n<h2>Hydrosailing<\/h2>\n<p>A maritime sport that is again mentioned offhandedly, with Kes taking holographic lessons in it on <em>Voyager<\/em>. First mentioned in the <em>TNG<\/em> season one episode \u201c11001001\u201d in 1988, it would take\u00a0<em>36 years<\/em> for it to be shown on-screen in <em>Prodigy<\/em>\u2018s sophomore season. An apparently dangerous (and occasionally violent) sport, Parrises Squares saw teams of four use ion mallets to bat a ball into an opposing goal. The squares in the name presumably come from the grid-based court it was played on, with each square in the grid capable of changing height mid-game.
