Ian Somerhalder<\/strong> revealed that he and wife Nikki Reed<\/strong> sank their teeth into crushing debt and found a way to bounce back \u2014 but not without putting in some serious work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI retired from acting seven years ago,\u201d the Vampire Diaries<\/em> alum, 47, told E! News<\/em> at the Beverage Forum in Manhattan Beach, California, on Tuesday, April 28. \u201cI left an insanely lucrative career in television after financial upheaval from building a business that I didn\u2019t build properly. And due to fraud, it put my wife and I into an eight-figure hole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somerhalder admitted that the debt was \u201ca hard hole to climb out of,\u201d going on to reveal that Reed\u2019s help was essential to him getting back on track.<\/p>\n

Prior to getting in a relationship with the Twilight<\/em> actress, 37, Somerhalder built a clean energy company while starring as Damon on The Vampire Diaries<\/em>, revealing in May 2021 that it was a business venture he invested into \u201cheavily\u201d while making \u201chuge personal guarantees to banks.\u201d (The Vampire Diaries<\/em> ran for eight seasons from 2009 to 2017.)<\/p>\n

Somerhalder \u2014 now dad to 8-year-old daughter Bodhi and a 2-year-old son with Reed \u2014 said that things went awry \u201cdue to greed and fraud within that company and fraudulent activities from our biggest customer.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted the temporary collapse of the oil and gas industry at the time was the final straw that broke hs financial back. The former small screen star said in his new interview that \u201cit all came crashing down\u201d after he made promises to lenders he couldn\u2019t keep.<\/p>\n

In hindsight, Somerhalder said he \u201cshould have been retiring off of one of the biggest TV shows in the world\u201d instead of \u201cstarting companies that were not gonna pay me possibly ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
