And so, when the museum Lucas co-founded, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, opens later this year in Los Angeles, <em>Star Wars<\/em> will obviously play a role. However, the full list of exhibitions that\u2019ll be on display at the opening was just announced, and a galaxy far, far, away\u00a0is but a mere fraction of the collection.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled to open September 22 in downtown Los Angeles, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will feature around 1,200 objects spread across 30 galleries, taking up about 100,000 square feet of gallery space. And while some of us (like me) would be incredibly happy if that was all <em>Star Wars,<\/em> the whole point of the museum is much grander than that. Shepard, Jacob Lawrence, and more<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cinema<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a selection of production designs, props, and costumes from the Lucas Archives<\/li>\n<li><strong>Everyday life<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a series of galleries dedicated to visual stories about\u00a0<strong>Childhood, Community,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Family, Love, Motherhood, Play, School, Sports,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Work<\/strong>, expressing the myths that have both reflected and shaped modern American society<\/li>\n<li><strong>Civic Life<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 artists\u2019 portrayals of experience in the courthouse, the polling place, the political headquarters, and more<\/li>\n<li><strong>Comics<\/strong>\u00a0\u2022\u00a0<strong>Graphic Stories\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 a showcase of the museum\u2019s deep holdings of American and European comics, including works by M\u0153bius, Marie Severin, Jack Kirby, Alison Bechdel, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, and Rafael Navarro<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manga \u2022 Anime\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 selections from the Museum\u2019s collection of the influential work in Japanese illustration and animation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frazetta<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 selected illustrations and book covers by the flamboyant Frank Frazetta<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 paintings, prints, and illustrations telling (and pointedly re-telling) the stories of major historical events<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jessie Willcox Smith<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 classic scenes by the illustrator of fairy tales and childhood scenes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Murals \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>large-scale, public works of narrative art by Judith F. Baca, Diego Rivera, and JR<\/li>\n<li><strong>Narrative Forms:\u00a0<\/strong>a series of galleries highlighting narrative art across genres of\u00a0<strong>Adventure<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Fantasy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Romance<\/strong><wbr\/>, and\u00a0<strong>Science Fiction<\/strong>\u00a0by artists including Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, Ken Kelly, Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s, John C. Berkey, and Jeffrey Catherine Jones<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parrish \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>lush, dreamy visions from the early 20th\u00a0century by illustrator Maxfield Parrish<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photography \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>powerful documentary images by Robert Capa, Gordon Parks, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Dorothea Lange, and others<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rockwell<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a selection of the Museum\u2019s renowned holdings of works by premier American illustrator Norman Rockwell<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wyeth<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 book illustrations from the 1910s through the 1940s by the incomparable N.C. Wyeth<\/li>\n<li><strong>Western Stories\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 myths of the American West, including wagon trains, shoot-outs, frontier towns, and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a very eclectic mix of exhibits, tackling all angles in relation to \u201cnarrative art.\u201d And while we\u2019d imagine there could be <em>Star Wars<\/em> in multiple sections, we think most of it will be in that \u201cCinema\u201d section, such as the Doug Chiang concept art at the top of this article. We also already know there will be a life-size Naboo Starfighter, a statue of General Grievous on his bike, a full-size landspeeder from <em>A New Hope,\u00a0<\/em>the original plans and model for the <em>Millennium Falcon<\/em>, a Darth Vader costume, and a full-sized Yoda model.<\/p>\n<p>This all sounds incredibly awesome, though. In particular, the Normal Rockwells sound fascinating, Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s\u2019 sci-fi art sounds incredible, a full Frank Frazetta exhibit is excellent, all of the comic art sounds unbelievable, and that\u2019s just the start.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about the museum at its official website.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Want more io9 news?
