David Allan Coe<\/strong>\u2018s daughter, Tanya Montana Coe<\/strong>, appears to be in shock over her father\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cWaking up to the news that your dad has died and not being given the opportunity to see him one last time is a hell I wouldn\u2019t wish on my worst enemy,\u201d Tanya, 39, wrote via Instagram<\/span> on Thursday, April 30. \u201cIf anyone finds out about any funeral arrangements, please let me know, as I would like to be at my dad\u2019s funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post<\/span> from September 2025, Tanya said she had a distant relationship with her father, writing in part, \u201cI had been estranged from my dad for quite awhile. \u2026 Suffice it to say, my father disowned me.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear if they were ever able to reconnect before David\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHollywood mourned the deaths of some of its most legendary stars in 2026. The year started off with Broadway performer and influencer Bret Hanna-Shuford\u2019s death at age 46. At the end of the month, comedy acting icon Catherine O\u2019Hara died at age 71. In February, Designing Women\u2019s Camilla Carr died at age 83, Dawson\u2019s Creek [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

News broke on Wednesday, April 29, that David had died at the age of 86. The outlaw country singer\u2019s wife, Kimberly Hastings Coe<\/strong>, confirmed the singer\u2019s death to Rolling Stone<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the best singers, songwriters, and performers of our time [and] never to be forgotten,\u201d she wrote to the publication. \u201cMy husband, my friend, my confidant and my life for many years. I\u2019ll never forget him, and I don\u2019t want anyone else to ever forget him either.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cause of death was not immediately available.<\/p>\n

David was a complex figure in the country music industry. He found success writing mainstream hits for artists like Tanya Tucker<\/strong>, Billie Jo Spears<\/strong> and Johnny Paycheck<\/strong>. He also was the first artist to record \u201cTennessee Whiskey,\u201d the song written by Dean Dillon<\/strong> and Linda Hargrove<\/strong> that is well known thanks to a cover sung by Chris Stapleton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the same time, David sparked controversy for a period of offensive, racist songs that he claimed were parodies.<\/p>\n

In 2000, The New York Times<\/i><\/span> called two of his early albums \u201camong the most racist, misogynist, homophobic and obscene songs recorded by a popular songwriter.\u201d<\/p>\n
