Amazon (AMZN) has an answer for investors questioning its massive spending on artificial intelligence: Demand for its cloud business is surging.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s cloud backlog \u2014 future business Amazon has already contracted but has not yet turned into revenue \u2014 jumped to $364 billion in the first quarter, CEO Andy Jassy said on the company\u2019s earnings call.<\/p>\n

And that figure doesn\u2019t include Amazon\u2019s recently announced Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) deal for more than $100 billion.<\/p>\n

Amazon’s cloud backlog is exploding \u2014 contracted cloud demand is surging as Amazon ramps up spending. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The increase is a sharp jump from the $244 billion in cloud backlog Amazon disclosed at the end of the fourth quarter. Back then, investors were still digesting the company\u2019s roughly $200 billion capital spending plan for 2026.<\/p>\n

The backlog is the key counterpoint to the cash-flow pressure that showed up in Amazon\u2019s first quarter results. The company is spending heavily on data centers, chips, servers, and other infrastructure before it can collect the revenue from that capacity.<\/p>\n

Jassy made that timing gap explicit on the earnings call, saying AWS has to lay out cash for \u201cland, power, buildings, chips, servers, and networking gear\u201d before it can monetize that spending. \u201cTypically six to 24 months before we start [billing] customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But he also pushed back on the idea that Amazon is building without visibility.<\/p>\n

Jassy said there is \u201creasonable breadth\u201d in the backlog \u2014 reported by Amazon as \u201cremaining performance obligations\u201d \u2014 and that it is \u201cnot just one customer or two customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

That makes backlog the number to watch after Amazon\u2019s earnings. If those contracts turn into revenue fast enough, the AI spending boom looks like a growth investment.<\/p>\n

Amazon\u2019s fresh record closing high on Thursday suggests investors are giving the company room to prove it.<\/p>\n
