It\u2019s officially been 20 years since Gilmore Girls<\/em> aired its divisive season 6 finale, concluding creators Amy Sherman-Palladino<\/strong> and Daniel Palladino<\/strong>\u2019s run on the show, and we\u2019re breaking down some must-know facts about the series to celebrate the anniversary.<\/p>\n

For example, did you know that Sherman-Palladino had the last four words of the show \u2014 that would eventually appear in the Netflix revival, A Year in the Life<\/em> \u2014 planned from the very beginning?<\/p>\n

Or that Sean Gunn<\/strong>, who played fan-favorite Kirk on the show, actually appeared as a different character first?<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s been 25 years since the world was first introduced to Gilmore Girls and its fast-talking, coffee-stalking mother and daughter \u2014 but you wouldn\u2019t know it given the passion of old fans and the slew of eager new ones. Within an hour of my September arrival at the A Weekend in the Life convention in [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

1. The Gilmore Girls<\/em> season 6 finale, \u201cPartings,\u201d aired on May 9, 2006.<\/p>\n

2. The episode sees Lorelai (Lauren Graham<\/strong>) and Luke\u2019s (Scott Patterson<\/strong>) relationship collapse after a series of emotional miscommunications, ending in a breakup that upends their future. Meanwhile, Rory (Alexis Bledel<\/strong>) makes a series of impulsive decisions about her relationship with Logan (Matt Czuchry<\/strong>) as she steps into adulthood outside of Yale.<\/p>\n

3. It marked the final episode written and directed by creator Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Palladino.<\/p>\n

4. The husband-and-wife duo exited the show before season 7 because of contract disputes with The CW, though the finale was written before the creative team knew they would not be returning.<\/p>\n

5. \u201cIt was a botched negotiation. It really was about the fact that I was working too much,\u201d Sherman-Palladino said of the decision to leave.<\/p>\n

6. As a result, they had no creative involvement in the show\u2019s seventh and final season.<\/p>\n

7. After their departure, season 7 writers had to reinterpret several intended arcs from scratch. When the Palladinos returned for the 2016 Netflix revival, A Year in the Life<\/em>, they revisited several unresolved emotional threads from this finale.<\/p>\n

8. The season 6 finale episode was directed by Sherman-Palladino herself.<\/p>\n

9. In the episode, the troubadour who is singing while Luke and Lorelai argue is Sam Phillips<\/strong>, who wrote and performed all of the show\u2019s original music.<\/p>\n

10. Gilmore Girls<\/em> originally premiered on October 5, 2000, on The WB.<\/p>\n

11. Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, the show starred Graham as Lorelai Gilmore and Bledel as her daughter, Rory.<\/p>\n

12. The show\u2019s famously fast dialogue was dense: \u201cThe normal hour show is, like, 50-60 pages of a script. And we used to get 88-92 pages,\u201d Patterson told Us<\/em>.<\/p>\n

13. Sherman-Palladino reportedly banned improvisation to maintain the show\u2019s precise rhythm and tone.<\/p>\n

14. Bledel had no prior acting credits before being cast as Rory.<\/p>\n

15. The iconic opening credits theme, \u201cWhere You Lead,\u201d was rerecorded as a duet by Carole King<\/strong> and her daughter for the series.<\/p>\n

16. Sherman-Palladino wrote the Gilmore Girls<\/em> pilot after a stay at a quaint Connecticut inn that inspired Stars Hollow.<\/p>\n

17. Melissa McCarthy<\/strong>\u2019s breakout as Sookie came during the show\u2019s early seasons, and her role was expanded after she became a fan favorite.<\/p>\n

18. Sookie was actually initially played by Alex Borstein<\/strong>, but she had to drop out of the role because of her obligations to MADtv.<\/p>\n

19. Gunn was initially introduced as a DSL installer named Mick, though he returned as a series regular named Kirk after Sherman-Palladino forgot he already had a name in the show.<\/p>\n

20. After the Palladinos\u2019 departure, Graham stepped up as a producer for the seventh season of the show.<\/p>\n

21. After leaving Gilmore Girls<\/em>, Sherman-Palladino created The Return of Jezebel James<\/em>, followed by the Sutton Foster<\/strong>-led ABC Family comedy drama, Bunheads<\/em>.<\/p>\n

22. It wasn\u2019t until her work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel<\/em> that Sherman-Palladino got her first Emmy nod, ultimately taking home six Emmy awards for the Prime Video series.<\/p>\n
