Audiences will have to wait a few months longer to see \u201cNarnia: The Magician\u2019s Nephew,\u201d with the release date pushed back from Thanksgiving to February 12, 2027.<\/p>\n
In addition to relaunching \u201cNarnia\u201d on big screens and serving as writer-director Greta Gerwig\u2019s first film since \u201cBarbie,\u201d \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew\u201d also looks like the next step in Netflix\u2019s relationship with movie theaters \u2014 and it\u2019s becoming an even bigger step with the delay.<\/p>\n
The company had previously said \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew\u201d would play exclusively on Imax screens for at least two weeks before a streaming release for Christmas. That would be an ambitious theatrical release by Netflix\u2019s standards, but relatively limited compared to many other Hollywood blockbusters.<\/p>\n
Now, Netflix says \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew\u201d will begin exclusive Imax previews on February 10, 2027, followed by a wide global release in theaters on February 12. (In Netflix\u2019s words, it will be a \u201cglobal eventized release.\u201d) The movie won\u2019t start streaming until April 2.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s announcement doesn\u2019t get more specific about which theaters will be showing \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew,\u201d but Imax released a statement noting that the delay will allow the film to have \u201ca full theatrical window,\u201d so the major theater chains are unlikely to complain<\/p>\n
In fact, AMC Theatres recently highlighted the success of\u00a0 its\u201cStranger Things\u201d finale screenings and said it has plans for more collaborations with Netflix. At the same time, the streamer\u2019s limited support for theatrical releases and its resistance to exclusive theatrical windows was reportedly a \u201cdealbreaker\u201d in negotiations with the creators of \u201cStranger Things,\u201d who ultimately signed an exclusive deal with Paramount.<\/p>\n
With a cast that includes Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew\u201d adapts one of the later books in C.S. Lewis\u2019 classic fantasy series \u2014\u00a0 a prequel that lays out the origins of Narnia.<\/p>\n
