Jamie Lynn Sigler<\/strong> can vividly recall her final conversation with her Sopranos<\/em> costar and TV dad, James Gandolfini<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were at a casino,\u201d Sigler, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> for her recent cover story promoting her upcoming book, And So It Is\u2026: A Memoir of Acceptance and Hope<\/em>. \u201cHe looked at me, and he was like, \u2018Do you need help walking?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I\u2019m OK right now.\u2019 He was like, \u2018All right, you tell me if you do.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I will.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Gandolfini \u2014 who played Mafia boss Tony Soprano, father to Sigler\u2019s character, Meadow \u2014 was the only person on the cast of the hit HBO show who knew that the actress had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember him being proud, like, \u2018OK, look at you. You\u2019re still doing this. You\u2019ve got this,’\u201d she recalled of the pair\u2019s final run-in. \u201cIt was a beautiful moment that I am very grateful we had because his death was obviously shocking to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDuring its six-season run, The Sopranos transformed television as we know it, earning its title as one of the greatest shows of all time. The HBO crime drama began in January 1999 with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) reluctantly walking into the office of his new psychiatrist, Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), after having a panic attack. [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Gandolfini died of a heart attack while vacationing in Italy with his family in 2013. He was only 51.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just remember how happy he was,\u201d Sigler told Us<\/em> of her late castmate. \u201cI was so happy to see him in a beautiful marriage [to Deborah Lin<\/strong>], in a beautiful space in his life, creatively doing things that he really loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cgentle\u201d and \u201ccaring\u201d Gandolfini Sigler knew off-screen was in stark contrast to the tough guy he played on the set of their crime drama, which aired from 1999 to 2007.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying Tony Soprano was really hard on him,\u201d she noted of the actor. \u201cIt was torture in many ways. He gave every ounce of himself, obviously, and so to see him so settled and so happy just made me so happy. He was always the dad. He was our pillar. He was our rock. But we also saw him struggle, and we also saw him go through really difficult times. And so it was almost like the similar moment of him and I both being like, \u2018We\u2019re good right now. Look at us. We\u2019re doing good.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Sopranos premiered on HBO in January 1999, and throughout its six-season run introduced viewers to actors who would eventually go on to become major stars. The late James Gandolfini starred as New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano for the entirety of the iconic show. Fans brought Tony and his family \u2014 Carmela Soprano (Edie [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sigler was diagnosed with MS at the age of 20, about halfway through The Sopranos<\/em>\u2018 six-season run. At first, she chose to keep her health battle a secret.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I was always acting. I felt like I was always pretending. I felt like I was always living a lie,\u201d she admitted to Us<\/em>. \u201cI had no idea what authenticity felt like. I had no idea what truth felt like. \u2026 I didn\u2019t even know who I was. All these secrets had piled up on top that I was just suffocated and literally just trying to survive every day. I was constantly in fight or flight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sigler recalled Gandolfini sensing something was going on with his costar.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had this way about him where it\u2019s almost like he would look at me just long enough to be like, \u2018I know you. I know something\u2019s going on,’\u201d she shared. \u201cAnd he would never press me. He would look at me, \u2018How are you?\u2019 And I would say, \u2018I\u2019m good.\u2019 And he\u2019d just look at me and nod.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJames Gandolfini was memorialized by his former cast members in The Sopranos documentary as they revisited the HBO show\u2019s success in a two-part documentary titled Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos. Released via HBO on Saturday, September 7, the film shows director Alex Gibney sitting face-to-face with the show\u2019s creator, David Chase, on a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ultimately, Sigler decided to confide in her TV dad, and the actor dutifully kept her secret until the very end. (Sigler went public with her health struggles in 2016, nearly three years after Gandolfini\u2019s death.)<\/p>\n
