Lowder, who entered the game with a 3-1 record and 3.18 ERA, allowed five hits and walked one in that inning. Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the second, Lowder struck out leadoff man Oneil Cruz before walking the next three batters: Brandon Lowe, Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn. Phillips replaced Lowder and walked all four batters he faced, each with the bases loaded.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was just the third time that a team walked at least seven consecutive batters within a single inning and the first since May 25, 1983, when Pirates pitchers walked seven Atlanta Braves batters in a row in the bottom of the third inning.

Phillips was removed after the fourth walk in favor of left-hander Sam Moll. Moll induced a run-scoring groundout by Pittsburgh catcher Henry Davis for the second out of the inning to break the walk streak. Cruz followed with a groundout to end the inning.

The Pirates’ five-run second was the first time since April 27, 1994, that a team allowed at least five runs without allowing a hit, when the Seattle Mariners allowed five runs without a hit to the New York Yankees.

Moll walked the first batter he faced in the third but didn’t allow a run, despite giving up a pair of hits in the frame.

Cincinnati entered the weekend series in Pittsburgh atop the National League Central before dropping the first game of the series 9-1, with starter Brady Singer lasting just 3 1/3 innings in the loss.

The Reds started the season 20-11 and entered the series in first place in the NL Central, even without Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo, their top two starters. The Reds’ starting pitching depth was already stretched thin because of those injuries before Wednesday, when lefty Brandon Williamson exited the game with a shoulder injury after two innings.

The Reds have tied a Major League record with seven consecutive walks!

📺: FS1 pic.twitter.com/KCqSVsBJ2Z

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) May 2, 2026

Friday’s loss, coupled with a victory by the Chicago Cubs, moved the Reds into a tie for first place in the division. Then the Cubs pushed their record to 21-12 with a 2-0 victory on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Reds had only played three games in the division entering this weekend’s series in Pittsburgh, dropping two of three to the Pirates at Great American Ball Park earlier this season. The Reds travel to Chicago for a four-game series against the Cubs beginning Monday.

Monday was Williamson’s spot in the rotation, but he was placed on the injured list before Thursday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies. Right-hander Chase Petty was pulled from his start for Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday following Williamson’s injury. Manager Terry Francona said Thursday that no plan had been made for Monday’s game, but with back-to-back short outings to start the series in Pittsburgh, a bullpen game against the Cubs appears to be unlikely.

Lodolo, who started the season on the IL with a left index finger blister, is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Louisville Saturday night. Lodolo’s first rehab stint was stopped short after the blister returned in April. He has made one rehab start since then, pitching last week at High-A Dayton. Francona said Thursday that Lodolo skipping the rehab start to pitch for the Reds on Monday was not an option. Friday and Saturday’s short outings by starters could change that.

The Reds’ next off day isn’t until May 11.

Cincinnati Reds pitchers tied a major-league record with seven consecutive walks in the second inning of Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, as the Reds’ control of the National League Central may have vanished like starter Rhett Lowder’s and reliever Connor Phillips’ grip of the strike zone.
