What Is the Met Gala?<\/h2>\n

The Met Gala is a fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s Costume Institute. Also known as The Costume Institute Benefit, the event is the Costume Institute\u2019s \u201cprimary source of funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations and capital improvements,\u201d per The Met.<\/p>\n

How Is the Met Gala Theme Chosen?<\/h2>\n

Every year, the theme matches The Costume Institute\u2019s spring exhibition. In 2023, the \u201cKarl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty\u201d exhibit is being celebrated. \u201cThe posthumous exhibition \u2018Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty\u2019 (opening May 5) will spotlight the German fashion designer\u2019s unique working methodology and examine his stylistic vocabulary through the aesthetic themes that recurred in his work during his time at Chanel, Fendi, his eponymous brand, Karl Lagerfeld, and more,\u201d the Met stated in a press release.<\/p>\n

The 2026 gala features a \u201cFashion Is Art\u201d dress code, based on the gallery exhibit about costume art.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s truly about studying the form of the human body in a very artistic way, and how to place clothing on the different parts of the human body,\u201d event designer Raul \u00c1vila<\/strong> told Us <\/em>in May 2026. \u201cWe\u2019re all completely different \u2014 some are thin, some are fuller, some are tall, some are short. It\u2019s \u2018Costume Is Art\u2019 [sic] because they study the figure and shape of each human being, and from there they begin to design their pieces. It\u2019s a very interesting theme.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe annual Met Gala has been the biggest night in fashion since the 1940s \u2014 and being a cochair for the event has become a coveted title. The Met Gala was established in 1948 to raise money for then-newly founded Costume Institute. With the help of Vogue, which is a longtime partner for the event, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Why Are Met Gala Outfits Are So Weird?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s all about the theme. In 2019, the exhibit was \u201cCamp: Notes on Fashion,\u201d which encouraged stars to take on their campiest looks yet. Zendaya<\/strong> went as Cinderella, Jared Leto<\/strong> carried a Gucci prosthetic of his own head and Katy Perry<\/strong> was a chandelier before changing into a couture hamburger costume. Even when the theme is less outrageous, the benefit is for the Costume Institute, so designers like to embrace the opportunity to push boundaries and take creative risks.<\/p>\n

Most of the outfits are approved by Wintour in advance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t come to her because they think that she\u2019s going to say something bad. She\u2019s just going to guide the person to the best of her knowledge. She\u2019s Anna Wintour,\u201d \u00c1vila told Us<\/em>. \u201cShe was the editor-in-chief of Vogue<\/i>\u00a0magazine for over 30 years. She is the bible of fashion. She is the woman who has brought this today. So, yes, it\u2019s respectful to hear what she has to say about what you\u2019re going to wear.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Is the Met Gala?<\/h2>\n

The Met Gala is typically held the first Monday in May. It marks the opening of the Costume Institute\u2019s new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Monday is Broadway\u2019s \u201cdark\u201d day, meaning most Broadway theaters are closed. That almost guarantees that theater stars and theatergoers are available \u2014 a key element for an iconic New York City event.<\/p>\n

Arrivals are set to start at 5:30 p.m. ET and can continue until as late as 9:30 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n
