First lady Melania Trump<\/strong> reportedly spoke up when senior officials of her husband President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s administration convened following a shooting at this year\u2019s White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner to discuss whether the event should be postponed.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was advocating within the room for that type of stance,\u201d Marc Beckman<\/strong>, the exclusive senior advisor to Melania, 56, told People<\/em> in an interview published on Saturday, May 2, adding that the first lady believed \u201cthe right thing to do\u201d following the incident was to end the dinner \u2014 meant to celebrate freedom of the press \u2014 that evening.<\/p>\n

Melania\u2019s husband famously said he wanted the White House Correspondents\u2019 dinner to continue after a 31-year-old man armed with a shotgun, handgun and several knives stormed a security checkpoint outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton hotel on April 25.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job,\u201d the president wrote via his social media platform Truth Social shortly after the alleged shooter was apprehended. (The California man has been charged with multiple crimes, including attempting to assassinate the president after a so-called manifesto was sent to his family in which he detailed his feelings about the Trump administration.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThey acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we \u2018LET THE SHOW GO ON\u2019 but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,\u201d Trump\u2019s post continued. \u201cThey will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we\u2019ll just, plain, have to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

After White House Correspondents\u2019 President Weijia Jiang<\/strong> initially told attendees the \u201cprogram is going to resume shortly,\u201d she announced that law enforcement \u201crequested that we leave the premises.\u201d The event was canceled and, while speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed it would be rescheduled within 30 days.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em> has reached out to the White House for comment on Melania\u2019s reported feelings about the dinner after the shooting.<\/p>\n

Beckham told People that the first lady was \u201ccalm, decisive, and in full control\u201d amidst the chaos and as Secret Service agents got her and her husband off the Correspondents\u2019 Dinner stage. Several high-level Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance<\/strong> and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr<\/strong>. were also quickly evacuated.<\/p>\n
