I just can\u2019t,\u201d DeVaux, 44, told reporters after Golden Tempo\u2019s victory on Saturday, May 2. \u201cI\u2019m just so so so happy for Golden Tempo. <strong>Jos\u00e9<\/strong> [<strong>Ortiz<\/strong>, the jockey] did a wonderful job, a masterful job getting him there and he has had so much faith in this horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what it meant to her to become the first female trainer to emerge victorious at the historic race, she added, \u201cI honestly don\u2019t know, I\u2019m glad that I can be a representative of all women everywhere that we can do anything that we set our minds to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeVaux was joined during her post-race interview by her and husband <strong>David Ingordo<\/strong>\u2019s 15-year-old daughter <strong>Reagan<\/strong>, who proudly described her mom\u2019s historic Kentucky Derby win as \u201ctruly an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of you, I really am,\u201d Reagan told her mom.<\/p>\n<p>Jockey Jos\u00e9 and Golden Temple outran heavy favorites Renegade, So Happy and Further Ado at the annual Louisville, Kentucky, race. This was Jos\u00e9\u2019s first Derby victory \u2014 a career milestone he achieved while competing head-to-head against his brother <strong>Irad Ortiz Jr.<\/strong>, who was riding Renegade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very special,\u201d Jos\u00e9 told reporters while crying. \u201cI just wish my grandpa was here \u2026 I\u2019m just very happy that I get my goal, my life-dream goal, achieved. It\u2019s an amazing experience and I can\u2019t wait to see my family and celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 started jockeying in his native Puerto Rico before moving to the U.S. to compete in the mid-2010s. It takes time, you got to work \u2014 be responsible, respect people. They got to know that I was sitting there 50 years ago in the same chair they\u2019re sitting \u2026 Dreams do come true, you just got to dream big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeVaux became a lead horse trainer in 2019 after spending eight years as an assistant to <strong>Chuck Simon<\/strong> and <strong>Chad Brown<\/strong>. This is our first Derby starter, and we\u2019re one step closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many famous faces were on hand to witness DeVaux\u2019s groundbreaking Kentucky Derby win, including University of North Carolina Tar Heels football coach <strong>Bill Belichick<\/strong> and his girlfriend <strong>Jordon Hudson<\/strong>.
