\n\tNearly 20 years after his directorial debut, Jon M. Chu is reflecting on the imposter syndrome he\u2019s faced in his career.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe Wicked<\/em> director recently admitted that he once didn\u2019t think he \u201cdeserved to be in Hollywood\u201d during a Canva Create panel last month at SoFi Stadium, explaining that he frequently questions, \u201cWhy am I the person to tell the story?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWhen you said my list of movies, it lit up and you said Crazy Rich Asians<\/em>,\u201d he said, according to People<\/em>. \u201cThat was a big point in my life. I didn\u2019t think I deserved to be in Hollywood. I was discovered and I got very lucky. And when you win the lottery, you think you actually don\u2019t know how you got there. So you actually can\u2019t win the lottery again.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tChu added, \u201cI had to learn how to win in a different way or how to tell my story. \u2026 As I go through my career, that moment, choosing to do something that only I could tell was a scary \u2026 I was like, \u2018No one\u2019s going to see this movie.\u2019 I actually told my team, I was like, \u2018I\u2019m going to make a movie. I\u2019m going to take five years and I\u2019m not going to make you any money.\u2019 Luckily they were fine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tWith his team\u2019s support, Chu \u201cknew that audience, whether you were Asian or not, would fall in love with the things that I fall in love with my family, the meals that we eat, the conversations we had, we could make fun of ourselves and how we are, and we had all walks of life in there.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tFollowing his work on Wicked<\/em> (2024) and Wicked: For Good<\/em> (2025), Chu is set to direct multiple upcoming titles, including the Hot Wheels movie for Mattel, Warner Bros and Bad Robot, and an adaptation of Dr. Seuss\u2019 Oh, the Places You\u2019ll Go!<\/em> with co-director Jill Culton.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
