Already, he\u2019s teasing out some of his vision for what he\u2019ll do with the dormant slasher franchise, and provided some insight on his own history with it.<\/p>\n<p>Talking to Total Film, Barker assured his plans to do something \u201cdifferent\u201d than previous\u00a0<em>Texas\u00a0<\/em>films and build on what\u2019s already there. One thing he wants to hone in on, for example, is \u201cthe uncomfortability of family. I want to lean into the rawness of what\u2019s going on there\u2014there\u2019s some really messed up stuff happening at that farm. I genuinely feel there\u2019s so much potential for that concept that has not been realized.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Obsession director Curry Barker teases his upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie from A24, and it sounds like it will focus on Leatherface&#8217;s family <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TheTexasChainsawMassacre?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#TheTexasChainsawMassacre<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oLsMPOIvAa\">pic.twitter.com\/oLsMPOIvAa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Total Film (@totalfilm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/totalfilm\/status\/2050636678424150449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Barker loves the original <em>Texas Chainsaw Massacre, <\/em>but he confessed that his favorite entry in the series is actually the 2003 remake. Directed by Marcus Nispel, the film\u2014which, like the 1974 original, focuses on Leatherface and his family terrorizing a group of young adults\u2014was a financial success that led to other horror franchises rebooting themselves. Reactions to it were mixed at the time, and Barker clearly leans more toward positive, calling it \u201cactually a decent remake. It was like my first horror movie I\u2019d ever seen when I was a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With that background info, his desire to examine the Hewitt family makes a bit more sense: Barker feels the idea has \u201cso much [that] hasn\u2019t been dived into,\u201d so of course he\u2019s going to dive into it. As to what form that exploration will take, we\u2019ll have to wait for more info on his <em>Texas Chainsaw Massacre\u00a0<\/em>movie to determine that. But watching <em>Obsession\u00a0<\/em>when that comes out on May 15 may offer some hints as to where his mind\u2019s at.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Want more io9 news?
