The Bear<\/em> is officially returning for its fifth and final season \u2014 but where does the show go after that depressing ending amid Carmy\u2019s controversial romance with Claire?<\/p>\n

The hit Hulu series, which premiered in 2022, explores the food industry through the lens of a talented chef named Carmy (Jeremy Allen White<\/strong>), who returned to Chicago shortly after his older brother Mikey\u2019s (Jon Bernthal<\/strong>) death to take over their family sandwich shop, The Beef. After closing the local spot, Carmy and the employees reinvented the restaurant into The Bear, which has found success and failure.<\/p>\n

Despite building to The Bear thriving, season 4 took a sharp left turn in the finale when Sydney (Ayo Edebiri<\/strong>), Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach<\/strong>) and Natalie (Abby Elliot<\/strong>) found out that Carmy was preparing to retire and leave the restaurant to them.<\/p>\n

This ending left fans less than thrilled considering Carmy was now separate from everyone except his love interest Claire (Molly Gordon). After reconnecting earlier in the season, it seemed like the fictional couple would be getting back together, which didn\u2019t please some of the audience.<\/p>\n

In the season 4 finale, Sydney was not thrilled to find out that her partner was leaving her, which resulted in an emotional argument. Richie joined in and their fight got worse when Carmy brought up Mikey and how the group was still working through their grief. Sydney agreed to stay under one condition \u2014 she wanted Richie to become a partner.<\/p>\n

Natalie was also emotional realizing that Carmy was leaving the family business behind. She started crying as the scene switched to The Bear at night as the timer Cicero (Oliver Platt<\/strong>) gave them to mark the two months they had left to save the restaurant reached its countdown.<\/p>\n

The conclusion originally felt like a series finale \u2014 especially with no clarity on whether The Bear will thrive with Sydney in charge or if it is about to go under.<\/p>\n

Will Carmy and Claire Remain Together Despite the Backlash?<\/h3>\n

Based on past seasons, Claire will presumably return despite still not being written into the story beyond being Carmy\u2019s love interest. It didn\u2019t help that some viewers felt more chemistry between Carmy and Sydney, who is played by Gordon\u2019s real-life best friend Edebiri.<\/p>\n

Gordon, who has been linked to White since 2024, addressed fan backlash before season 4 premiered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m always \u2018the friend,\u2019\u201d she told Vanity Fair in June 2025. \u201cI\u2019ve never played the romantic person. I was like, \u2018Whoa, this is going to be a different experience.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Gordon noted that White\u2019s role \u201cis a character that people feel so protective over, and it\u2019s been kind of controversial to bring a romantic element into the show. That\u2019s been at times annoying, fascinating and interesting \u2014 just to be a part of something that people have opinions on.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Many More Seasons of \u2018The Bear\u2019 Could There Be?<\/h3>\n

Moss-Bachrach told The Telegraph<\/em> in June 2024 that he wasn\u2019t expecting the show to go on for much longer, saying, \u201cI feel like we\u2019re getting near to the end of The Bear. It seems like that story is wrapping up to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor said he will miss playing Richie. \u201c[He\u2019s] very dear to me,\u201d Moss-Bachrach said.<\/p>\n

It feels important to note that the cast filmed seasons 3 and 4 at the same time due to White, Edebiri and Moss-Bachrach\u2019s busy schedules, so the end could be near.<\/p>\n

FX confirmed in May 2026 that season 5 is the show\u2019s last.<\/p>\n

FX chairman John Landgraf<\/strong> told Variety<\/em> in July 2024 about the plan for the series, saying, \u201cWe really don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cThese decisions are really creative decisions. It\u2019s about how much more story does [creator Christopher Storer] have to tell? I mean, obviously, I\u2019m hoping he has more \u2026 You just have to follow the creative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jamie Lee Curtis later confirmed that the cast was told the show was done after season 5. \u201cEverybody is confirming that the show is ending, I don\u2019t understand why,\u201d she told Access Hollywood in March 2026. \u201cEverybody understood that it was the last season of the show. If it isn\u2019t then just I completely blown it, I think they\u2019ve all said the final season, I think those words.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where Is Tina\u2019s Story Heading?<\/h3>\n

Liza Col\u00f3n-Zayas made it clear in June 2025 that she knew nothing about what is to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. I really don\u2019t. We don\u2019t know. We don\u2019t know the change in strategy \u2014 with Carmy leaving behind the need to pull off chaos, and sticking with consistency \u2014 how that may have affected word of mouth, whoever\u2019s coming in,\u201d she noted to Variety<\/em>. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s the Hail Mary. I honestly don\u2019t know. Is there any Hail Mary that can come through now that that clock has reached zero? I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t want it to end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Col\u00f3n-Zayas said her character, Tina, would \u201cbe devastated\u201d by where things ended up in season 4.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause this isn\u2019t just about a job. When she walked into The Beef in the \u2018Napkins\u2019 episode, it was just about a job and taking any job,\u201d she shared. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think this is just about this job. Now this is so much bigger than that. This show is very much about grieving and loss, and also moving forward. So I think she\u2019ll land on her feet. But it\u2019s gonna be hard personally.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for how Col\u00f3n-Zayas would feel about saying goodbye to the show?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve already cried too many times. I love my job. I don\u2019t want it to end,\u201d she concluded. \u201cBut what I love and respect about it is maintaining the truth and the integrity and perhaps the reality that bigger, better restaurants have not been able to withstand all of the challenges of you know, rising prices, COVID, all of these things.\u201d<\/p>\n
