Tracker<\/em>\u2018s Justin Hartley<\/strong> is getting brutally honest about the need to protect his relationship with wife Sofia Pernas<\/strong> from people who may not have the best intentions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard this from my stepdad where he said to me a long time ago, \u2018You got to take care of your relationship and be very protective of who you surround yourself with and what relationships you surround yourself with,’\u201d Hartley, 49, recalled on the Tuesday, May 5, episode of Tommy DiDario<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cI\u2019ve Never Said This Before\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause there will be people that are in your life right now that you think are your friends and they simply cannot handle your relationship. They can\u2019t handle it,\u201d Hartley continued. \u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily sad but it is just true that when you have a relationship that you really care about [and] it could be a friendship, it could be with your mom or your dad or it could be with your dog.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cAny relationship that you have with yourself, there are going to be people that you have to be careful with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hartley clarified that the problem isn\u2019t always that about a loved one \u201ctrying to sabotage\u201d a situation or relationship. In fact, he argued, they might not know they\u2019re being harmful at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not bad people,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just can\u2019t handle it. And you don\u2019t need to be hearing things like that. I\u2019m not saying that you should be surrounded by sycophants and that\u2019s healthy. But there\u2019s certainly a difference between someone rooting for your love and rooting for your relationship vs. something who is jealous of what you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hartley recalled being in a similar situation in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve certainly in my life been jealous before, no question,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s never once serviced me in any way positively at all \u2014 ever \u2014 to be envious or anything like that. I now can look at someone and really be encouraged by that. \u2026 But if you don\u2019t feel that way, there\u2019s a difference between being competitive and being envious.\u201d<\/p>\n
