Hayden Panettiere<\/strong> is pulling back the curtain on her brief romance with Laguna Beach<\/em>\u2019s Stephen Colletti<\/strong> nearly 20 years after they called it quits.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful that he was part of my life, especially when he was,\u201d Panettiere, 36, exclusively reveals in her Us Weekly<\/em> cover story on newsstands now. \u201cBecause when I was with him was when I started having to deal with paparazzi and tabloids and being the focal point of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere explains that because of Colletti\u2019s time on MTV\u2019s Laguna Beach<\/em> \u2014 which he starred on from 2004 to 2005 \u2014 that type of attention was \u201csomething he had dealt with before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[He] was able to help guide me through that experience and getting used to that,\u201d Panettiere recalls, revealing that Colletti, 40, was \u201cvery protective of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nashville<\/em> alum notes that Colletti handled the press \u201cvery diplomatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never appeared to be [or] came off as a bad guy,\u201d Panettiere tells U<\/em>s of the former reality star. \u201cSo I knew that there was a way to protect yourself and put up boundaries without being offensive or rude.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere and Colletti dated for nearly two years after being linked in 2006, and according to the actress, their breakup wasn\u2019t scandalous or contentious. (They parted ways by the end of 2007.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just ended up going our separate ways, there wasn\u2019t really a story there,\u201d she says. \u201cLike, no drama.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Heroes<\/em> alum reveals that she \u201cran into him for the first time in ages\u201d recently and it was a pleasant surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s about to become a dad and I\u2019m so happy for him,\u201d Panettiere adds. \u201cWe don\u2019t keep in touch the way that I wish we did, because he\u2019s such a great guy, but there was no drama.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reiterates, \u201cThere was really no story\u201d surrounding their split. \u201cIt was so peaceful and kind,\u201d Panettiere tells Us<\/em> with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Panettiere has had several high-profile relationships since her Hollywood start, which began in the early \u201890s as a child star.<\/p>\n

Colletti was one of her first public romances \u2014 but his love life was already headline-making news after he dated his high school sweetheart Kristin Cavallari<\/strong> on Laguna Beach<\/em> and flirted with longtime pal Lauren \u201cLC\u201d Conrad<\/strong> on the show in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

After Laguna Beach<\/em>, Colletti went on to star on One Tree Hill<\/em> and later cocreated Everyone Is Doing Great<\/em>, on which he also stars. He married Alex Weaver<\/strong> in 2025 and they are expecting their first baby together.<\/p>\n

Panettiere, meanwhile, went on to date Heroes<\/em> costar Milo Ventimiglia<\/strong>, who is 12 years her senior, from 2007 to 2009.<\/p>\n

The actress dated boxer Wladimir Klitschko<\/strong> on and off from 2009 to 2013 before getting engaged that year. The pair welcomed their daughter, Kaya, in December 2014. Panettiere and Klitschko, 50, split for good in August 2018.<\/p>\n
