After years of not being believed, Jeni Haynes<\/strong> opened up like never before about her father Richard Haynes<\/strong>\u2019 years of abuse in Investigation Discovery\u2019s documentary We Are Jeni<\/em>.<\/p>\n

From experiencing the abuse, creating thousands of alternate personalities and finally getting justice, Us Weekly breaks down the biggest bombshells revealed in ID\u2019s We Are Jeni<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Jeni Haynes Details Richard Haynes\u2019 Abuse in \u2018We Are Jeni\u2019<\/h2>\n

Richard, his wife and their children moved from London to Australia in 1974 when Jeni was 4 years old. \u201cBy moving us from the U.K. to Australia, he broke contact with mum\u2019s friendship groups and with her family,\u201d Jeni said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father physically abused me with endless beltings and my father raped me almost every day. Sometimes multiple times a day for 14 years,\u201d Jeni claimed. \u201cAnd then when you talk about it, everyone calls you a liar because there\u2019s no outward sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeni Haynes Became Estranged From Richard Haynes After Her Parents\u2019 Divorce<\/h2>\n

Jeni\u2019s parents divorced in 1984 when she was 14. She stayed in Australia with her mother, while Richard moved back to England.<\/p>\n

Years later, Jeni learned her father allegedly sexually abused someone else in England in 1996. After her \u201cgreatest terror had become a reality,\u201d she went to the Australian police \u2014 including retired police officer Kim Whitman<\/strong> \u2014 to share her own story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told Kim Whitman the barest minimum I could get away [with] because my goal was to provide enough information that my father was dangerous so that the Australian police would be able to let the English police know,\u201d Jeni said.<\/p>\n

Jeni Haynes Was Diagnosed With Dissociative Identity Disorder<\/h2>\n

Another topic Jeni touched on was her dissociative identity disorder diagnosis, which she developed as a way to cope with the abuse.<\/p>\n

According to the Cleveland Clinic, DID is \u201ca mental health condition where you have two or more separate personalities that control your behavior at different times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Psychiatrist Dr. George Blair-West<\/strong> said Jeni\u2019s condition should be viewed as a \u201csurvival strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis condition develops prior to the age of 8,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s designed, it\u2019s built, to help a child get through ongoing recurrent severe abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAfter being accused of faking her own kidnapping, Sherri Papini has been focused on rehabilitating her mental health with help from her therapist, lawyer and a comeback coach. During an exclusive interview for Us Weekly\u2019s cover story about Papini\u2019s life now, therapist Dr. Stephen Diggs, lawyer Chase Kinney and comeback coach Tim Storey opened up [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jeni introduced several of her personalities, or \u201calters,\u201d during the documentary, including 4-year-old Symphony, 17-year-old Muscles and 21-year-old Erik.<\/p>\n

Each alter serves a different purpose, and Symphony is the alter that remembers the abuse Jeni went through.<\/p>\n

Richard Haynes Was Arrested for Sexual Abuse<\/h2>\n

After the unnamed woman in the U.K. and Jeni came forward with their allegations, Richard was arrested and charged with 11 offenses that ranged from rape and sexual assault. Four of the charges involved crimes he committed against Jeni.<\/p>\n

Jeni and her mother were subpoenaed to the U.K. to attend the trial.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the morning of the scheduled trial, everything went to s**t,\u201d Jeni said, explaining that Richard took a plea bargain and the charges connected to Jeni\u2019s abuse were dropped.<\/p>\n

Richard was convicted on charges related to the victim in the U.K. and he was sentenced to serve nine years in prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came back from England feeling disbelieved. I was devastated by how things played out and I was spiraling mentally,\u201d Jeni recalled. \u201cI could not get it out of my head. We spent three weeks in the psychiatric ward trying to recover from that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeni Haynes Reconnected With Richard Haynes in 2003<\/h2>\n

Jeni reached out to Richard in 2003 to wish him a happy birthday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote a letter to him saying it\u2019s time we grew up, faced reality, accepted it and put it all behind us and moved on,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought that we could send letters backwards and forwards and if he didn\u2019t respond in the way I hoped he would, I could just cut all ties and disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeni added that she was \u201cdesperate to put the abuse behind me\u201d and to \u201clive a life that wasn\u2019t about my abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSherri Papini first made headlines in 2016 \u2014 when she went missing while on a jog near her Redding, California, home \u2014 and they haven\u2019t stopped since. The first big development was her shocking return 22 days after her disappearance. The fact that it happened on Thanksgiving Day was an even sweeter reward, for her [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI wanted my father. We were talking regularly on the phone for sometimes three, four hours. He was caring, considerate, mindful of other people,\u201d she recalled. \u201cHe was everything I had ever wanted him to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

As their conversations continued, Richard wrote a letter asking to be relocated to Australia in 2003. \u201cI filled in the paperwork to support his application to stay in Australia permanently,\u201d Jeni said.<\/p>\n

After spending two months at the family home, Richard seemingly proved to be the father Jeni always wanted. However, that all changed when Richard allegedly raped her on her birthday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole process was utterly devastating. It was a moment when I realized that my father was still a child molesting b*****d and nothing was gonna change that,\u201d she recalled. \u201cThat was the beginning of the end for him. I withdrew my support for his application to stay in Australia and he was taken into immigration detention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard was officially deported back to the U.K. in 2005.<\/p>\n

Jeni Reported Richard Haynes\u2019 Abuse in 2009<\/h2>\n

In 2009, Jeni went to the Australian police to report the abuse against Richard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve struggled so hard and so long to tell our story and we are telling the truth too big to be believed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Jeni then wrote a 90,000-word victim statement, in which the alters were \u201call heard at once.\u201d She added, \u201cEverybody was integrated within one goal. Document everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Jeni worked with the Australian police for several years, Richard was arrested in the U.K. in 2019. He was then extradited to Australia and the case went to trial in February 2019.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHulu In addition to unseen footage from Ruby Franke\u2019s archives, Hulu\u2019s tell-all docuseries about the YouTuber featured her eldest kids breaking their silence about the beatings they went through before she was arrested for child abuse. During Hulu\u2019s three-part docuseries Devil in the Family, which premiered on Thursday, February 27, Ruby\u2019s eldest daughter and son, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrifying and good at the same time,\u201d Jeni said of the trial experience, explaining that each alter was allowed to testify and give evidence during the trial.<\/p>\n

Inspector Paul Stamoulis<\/strong> explained that Jeni\u2019s diagnosis was the backbone of the prosecution, so things could have \u201cgone wrong\u201d if the court wasn\u2019t willing to believe her. All of the alters even pledged to tell the truth during the trial.<\/p>\n

Halfway through the trial, Jeni said \u201cthe prosecution suggests we issue him with an offer and nominate those charges that we would want him to plead guilty to.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Jeni was upset that Richard wouldn\u2019t be accountable for all of the charges, she ultimately agreed to give him a plea deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s gonna get out after five minutes in prison and it\u2019s not fair, but in the end what mattered wasn\u2019t what he pled guilty to,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat mattered was that he pled guilty to something and went to prison and that\u2019s why I agreed and in the end I said yes to the plea bargain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard was ultimately sentenced to serve 45 years in prison, which is the toughest penalty for child abuse in Australia.<\/p>\n
